BEAUMONT —
BEAUMONT – Senior Jordan Ozen threw for over 400 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining to give Ozen a 33-29 win over West Brook Friday night at the Thomas Center.
Jakobi Jones also turned in a terrific all-around game with 190 yards receiving, 24 yards rushing and a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
“I just loved the way our kids came back in the second half and fought,” said Ozen coach Jeff Nelson. “It was a good game for us. That kickoff return was big for us. It got the adrenaline flowing. The defense played big for us in the first half.”
Early in the third quarter and trailing 13-7, the Bruins gained valuable field position behind a 67-yard punt from Diego Uribe that pinned the Panthers at their own 15. After a three-and-out, West Brook took over at the Ozen 31 following a 21-yard punt.
Cameron McBride scored on a 31-yard run on the very next play from scrimmage to give the Bruins their first lead of the game at 14-13.
Ozen (1-0) answered right back. On third-and-33 from its own 27, Ozen hit Andrew Michael on a crossing route and Michael ran away from the Bruins defense for a 73-yard scoring play to put the Panthers back up 19-14.
WB (0-1) responded in its next drive. After Justin Hervey converted on fourth-and-one with a 6-yard gain, Devin Padilla hit LaDarious Spearman on a 20-yard scoring strike to cap an 8-play, 59-yard scoring drive. Hervey, who carried four times for 39 yards on the drive, scampered around right end for a 2-point conversion to put the Bruins up 22-19.
Both teams exchanged turnovers deep in opponent territory and the Panthers were able to capitalize on their opportunity. Taking over at its own 24 after a Hervey fumble, Ozen reclaimed the lead at 26-21 on a 9-yard pass from Ozen to Leroy Jackson with 8:32 left in the game.
WB continued the see-saw second half with a scoring drive of its own. Hervey ended a 10-play scoring drive with a 15-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-3 with 5:08 remaining. Hervey finished with a game-high 167 yards rushing on 27 carries.
That left way too much time for the Ozen offense, which saved its longest scoring drive of the game for the clincher. The big play on the drive was a 14-yard completion from Ozen to Jackson on fourth-and-12 from the WB 34.
Jordan Ozen followed with consecutive runs of 9 and 5 yards to give the Panthers first-and-goal at the 6. Following a 5-yard run by Jackson, Ozen called his own number on a quarterback sneak to give the Panthers the lead for good at 33-29 with 57 seconds remaining in the game.
Jordan Ozen completed 17-of-30 passes for 415 yards. Jones was his top target, catching five passes for 190 yards. Kourtney Williams added four receptions for 68 yards and Michael hauled in three for 94.
WB won the toss and deferred to the second half. That decision didn’t pan out so well for the Bruins as Jones took the opening kickoff at his own 5 and raced untouched 95 yards for the first score of the game.
The score remained 7-0 Ozen until early in the second quarter. Jones took a middle screen pass from Ozen 65 yards for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 13-0 lead with 6:53 remaining in the first half.
WB finally broke through on its ensuing possession. Devin Padilla hit James Reed for a 15-yard completion on third-and-four to keep the drive alive. Padilla connected with Stephen Wycoff for a 14-yard completion to the 28. Justin Hervey scored on the next play to make the score 13-7 with 4:25 remaining in the second quarter.
Ozen threatened in the final seconds of the half. Ozen hit Jones over the middle and Jones broke several tackles and was finally forced out of bounds at the 1 with one-tenth of a second remaining for a 57-yard reception. Ozen hurried to the line of scrimmage, but Jones was tackled for a 3-yard loss to end the first half.
