Port Neches-Groves (Texas) High School head coach BRANDON FAIRCLOTH and assistant head coach and offensive coordinator JOE DALE CARY both have been named assistant coaches for the 2013 Under-19 U.S. National Team, assembled by USA Football.
Faircloth will serve as the National Team’s offensive coordinator. Cary will coach the offensive line.
Team USA is led by head coach AARON BRADY of Washington, D.C., Gonzaga College High School. The U-19 National Team will compete in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 5 in the fourth International Bowl. The International Bowl is an annual competition that unites the 64 nations spanning six continents that are part of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). The IFAF World Team is comprised of players age 19-and-under from outside the United States.
Faircloth has a 28-18 overall record in the four years since being named the head coach of the Indians. In his first year, Faircloth helped Port Neches-Groves record its first undefeated season since 1977, becoming only the third coach in team history to achieve that mark.
The Indians won a district championship, two bi-district championships and captured their first area championship since 1999 during Faircloth’s first three years. He has been selected as Dave Campbell’s 4A Coach of the Year, Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Coach of the Year, PA News Coach of the Year and District 20-4A Coach of the Year. Faircloth also was the offensive coordinator for Team USA in 2010.
“Wearing the ‘USA’ logo across my chest and representing my country through the game of football will always be a highlight of my career,” Faircloth said.”We had a great experience in 2011. We did some work with Aaron Brady at Gonzaga College High School last summer. We went up there and did a coaching clinic with them. He invited us to be part of this staff and we were glad to be a part of it again.”
Fairlcoth said working with coaches from around the nation was a great experience and gave him ideas not just for his football team, but also to help all parts of the Indians program.
“It is a huge, huge help,” Fairlcoth said. ” We got a chance to work with guys from Colorado, California, DC and Florida. We met some really incredible coaches. It was a great opportunity to share ideas , but not just about football. It was in all aspects of the program from the offseason to grade checks, just everything with your program.”
Cary has spent the last four seasons at Port Neches-Groves. Since his coaching debut in 2000 at Harker Heights High School in Killeen, Texas, Cary has spent extensive time teaching offensive lineman at various stops throughout his career, including Aledo (Texas) High School, where he helped the Bearcats win two district championships and advance to the state semifinals in 2006 and 2007.
“Coaching for Team USA is an opportunity of a lifetime for a high school coach,” Cary said. “I have the opportunity to not only work with some of the best athletes and coaches in the country but also to represent this great nation playing a sport it loves. I am extremely honored to have ‘USA’ across my chest as a coach.”
The other special part of working with this team is developing relationships with players from across the nation. Two of the players from the 2011 team are current Stanford starting quarterback Kevin Hogan, who played for Brady at Gonzaga College HS, and Texas running back Joe Bergeron, who played at North Mesquite.
“The QB on that team in 2011 is at Stanford,” Faircloth said. “And the RB is Joe Bergeron. I talked with (Hogan) all year, texted him to congratulate him on stuff. With opportunities like this, you make friends for life with both coaches and the players. You become a pretty good family during that week of preparation.”

Forty-five U.S. high school seniors will take the field for Team USA. The International Bowl is recognized as a U.S. National Team competition by the NCAA and is not an all-star game. International Bowl participation does not count toward a high school senior football player’s limit of two postseason competitions.
USA Football is the sport’s national governing body in the United States and is the official football development partner of the NFL, the NFL Players Association, each of the NFL’s 32 teams and college football’s Atlantic Coast Conference.
The IFAF World Team is led by head coach TUOMAS HEIKKINEN of Finland. Heikkinen was the World Team’s defensive backs coach in 2011 and 2012, and the five-time Coach of the Year in Finland was inducted into the Finnish American Football Federation Hall of Fame in 2008.
