SPRING — With sophomore Braden Bailey leading the way, the Port Neches-Groves Indians put on a convincing display in Klein’s Mllard Roth Invitational of why they are the state’s No. 1 ranked 4A golf team.
Bailey needed a playoff but claimed medalist honors and the Indians won the 36-hole tournament by 19 shots over Klein with a score of 594. St. Thomas finished 30 strokes back in third place in the 17-team event played at Glenloch Farms on Monday and Augusta Pines on Tuesday.
Bailey, the state’s No. 4 ranked player, carded rounds of 72-69 to tie with Jersey Village’s Jake Greenspoon, then claimed the medalist trophy with a par on the first hole of sudden death. Two other Indians — Lonnie Labove, fourth with a 70-74-144 and Jarrod Brown, eighth with a 75-72-147 — finished in the top 10.
No. 4 man Brandon Provost added an 81-81-162 for PN-G. Brandon Soileau shot 82-93-175.
PN-G opened with a 298, then came back with a 296. It was the Indians second tournament victory of the 2012-2013 school year. They won in December at Crown Colony in Lufkin.
Next tourney for PN-G is Feb. 8-9 at High Meadow Ranch. -- Bob West
