PN-G boys make playoffs, beat Livingston

PORT NECHES — Playoff appearances have been few and far between for the Port Neches-Groves boys basketball team. Since 1966, the team has only made the playoffs three times.

Now, though, head coach Pat Abel is almost making a postseason trip a tradition, as his Indians clinched the fourth and final playoff spot from District 20-4A Tuesday with a resounding 83-47 victory over Livingston.

With the victory and Lumberton’s 75-27 loss to Beaumont Ozen on Tuesday, PN-G (12-18, 7-7) finished a game ahead of the Raiders for fourth place.

The Indians will have to wait until Friday to figure out who they will play in the Class 4A bidistrict round, as Crosby and Humble finished tied for first place in 19-4A.

PN-G made the playoffs in 1965-66, then again in 1988-89. The Indians under Abel and Lamar’s Brennan Doty snapped a 21-year playoff draught by making the postseason in 2010-2011. Now, the Indians have made the postseason for the second time in three seasons, though none of the players on the current roster were on that ‘10-’11 team.

Brandon Pham led all scorers with 24 points for the Indians while teammate A.J. Smith added 21 and Ramil Glorioso scored 14. Livingston’s Anfernee Wilson had 16 points.

The Indians led 36-21 at halfime and opened the third quarter by scoring 30 points and sprinting towards that playoff spot. The 83 points PN-G scored was a season high, topping the 59 points the Indians scored against Orangefield on Dec. 4.
