West golf notepad: Harry Green strikes again on No. 7 at Zaharias

PORT ARTHUR — Add Harry Green of Nederland to those who view 7 as a lucky number. Green authored his second hole in one of 2012 last Wednesday on the 135-yard, 7th hole at Babe Zaharias. That in itself wouldn’t be too much out of the ordinary as far as the No. 7 is concerned. What makes the ace worth a double take is that it was Green’s second time to ace Zaharias’ 7th in 2012. The only way this would be a better story is if Green had used a 7-iron. His choice of clubs, however, was an 8-iron. Witnesses to the shot were Cap Hollier, Adam Noel and Paul Duplantis. Green also gets the distinction of having the last reported ace in 2012. So who will get the first hole in one of 2013 ? ? ? Frank Oakley won the year’s final Belle Oaks Senior Game, finishing plus 3 on Monday. Jim Robinson was second at zero. Ron Somerville won closest to the pin on No. 8 . . . In the Belle Oaks Senior Game played on Friday, Dec. 21, Bill Taylor won with zero points. Rufus Mier was second at minus 2. Frank Oakley took closest to the pin on No. 15 . . . Due to inclement weather, the final Babe Zaharias DogFight of the year was played on Dec. 19. There was a tie for first at 16&5 between the team of Steven Picou, Adam Noel, Gary Whitfill and Paul Brown and the team of Bill Hanley, Jim Cooper, Gene Hardy and Steve Wisnbaker. Third place at 15&4 went to the foursome of Joe Gongora, Ray Darbonne, Mark Petry and Art Miller. Closest to the hole winners were Roy Martinez (No. 2), Paul Brown (No. 7),  Gongora (No. 12) and Bill Hammond (No. 15) . . . Chris Stroud, who was in a major funk with the 2012 season ended, plans to launch his 2013 season at next week’s Sony Open in Honolulu. Stroud, whose last competitive round was Nov. 11 in what was the final Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Disney World, has spent much of the down time working on getting back to the swing that served him well earlier in his pro career. To insure he can complete preparations for the Sony in good weather, Chris is headed to Palm Springs to play and practice for a few days before flying to Hawaii . . . Happy New Year to all the avid Golf notepad readers. Here’s hoping I have the chance to include your name some time in 2013 for an ace, an albatross or some other golfing feat that’s worth shouting about.
