West golf notepad: Larry Voight authors ace at Zaharias

PORT ARTHUR — CHIP SHOTS: Larry Voight of Port Neches scored his second hole-in-one Tuesday at Babe Zaharias. Voight used a pitching wedge from 112 yards on the 15th hole. The shot was witnessed by Ron LaFleur, Gene Hardy and D.D. Perkins . . . Another golfer with area ties nearly slipped into the winner’s circle of a professional event last week. West Orange’s Michael Arnaud, who won earlier this year on the Adams Tour, tied for second in the Young Life Abilene Open. Arnaud’s closing 67 for a 17-under 271 left him one shot behind Regal Rafferty. His payoff was $5,255. Arnaud is No. 2 on the Adams money list at $31,485.25. The Adams Tour, by the way, will be at Beaumont Country Club the week of Sept. 4-8 . . . The Babe Zaharias DogFight was won by the team of Cody Metts, Steve Wisenbaker, John Bass and Paul Brown. They finished 20&7. Second at 19&6 was the team of Rick Pritchett, Dwayne Morvant, Larry Johnson and Mariano Nassar. Closest to the pin winners were Larry Padia (No. 2), Metts (No. 7), Tom Lawton (No. 12) and Dennis Frazier (No. 15) . . .The Senior Game at The Babe was played in a best ball/scramble format with 2-man teams. Jim Jordan-Pat Waite won First Flight at minus 6, finishing one-stroke clear of Eddie Delk-Jerry May. In Second Flight, Bob Byerly-E.T. Robicheaux won with minus 3. There was a three-way tie for second at even between Gene Hardy-C.Leard, Orland Defrates-Larry Foster and Guy Van Cleve-Tom Hatcher. In Third Flight, Maurice Ross-Ned Cole won with even par. Doc Richard-Jack Frank and Gene Noble-Mike Hess tied for second at plus 2. Closest to the pin winners were Waite (No. 2), Bob Moore (No. 7), Ken Fable (No. 12) and Robert Lynch (No. 15) . . . The Super Saturday Game at The Babe was played in a best 2 ball format. The team of Mike Gonzales, Gene Rountree, Gene Hardy and Lee Bertrand swept both nines, winning the front in minus 1 and the back in minus 5 . . .  Rufus Mier finished plus 4 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Norm Shannon was second at plus three and Barry Jackson third at 0. Twyman Ash was the closest to the pin winner on No. 8 . . . In the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks, Twyman Ash won with plus 5. Jim Brown and Raymond Rice tied for second at plus 4. Ron Somerville was the closest to the pin winner on No. 3 . . . The Senior 50 Plus Game at The Patch was played in a 2 best ball format. The team of Wadsworth Thompson, Larry Thompson, Joe Castleman and Terry Johnson won the front in minus 7. On the back, the foursome of Dennis Walsh, Ron Theriot, Buddy Bailey and Gary Fontenot won with minus 8 . . . The Port Neches Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual four-person scramble Friday, Sept. 7 at Bayou Din. Entry fee is $100 per player and includes all fees, beverages and lunch. To enter, call 722-9154. There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
