It took longer than usual, but the first hole-in-one of 2012 has final been recorded. And it came on a hole — No. 8 at Belle Oaks — that historically yields few aces. Bud Chatelain of Nederland was the guy who got this one, sinking a No. 9 iron from 135 yards on Saturday. It was his first ace. “It was a good shot with a little curl and looked like it was going to be close,” said the 47-year-old Chatelain. “It went in the cup on the second hop. Everybody was shocked. The guys playing with me told me I needed to save my ball and the scorecard, so I guess I will.” Witnesses were Butch Schneider, Thomas May and Jim Powell . . . Corbin Cormier fired a 74 to win Boys 16-18 in the first of six Southeast Texas Junior Tour/The First Tee of the Golden Triangle winter tour tournaments played over the par 71 Bayou Front and Bayou Back at Bayou Din Golf Club. Corey East and James Walker tied for second with 77s. Other flight winners were James Garrett (74 in Boys 14-15), Josh Elmore (89 in Boys 12-13); Shelbi Vincent (83 in Girls 16-18), Karlei Hemler (84 in Girls 14-15), Brynna Bailey (49 in Girls 12-13, 9 holes), Peyton Weems (45 in Co-Ed 10-11, 9 holes) Jack Burke (28 in Co-Ed 7-9, 6 holes) . . . Major Rising finished plus 7 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Rufus Mier and Jim Brown tied for second with 5 points. Bill Worsham won closest to the pin on No. 15 . . . Rising was also the winner of the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks, finishing plus 3. Brown was second at plus 2, followed by Barry Jackson and Wortham at 0. Mier was the closest to the pin winner on No. 12 . . . The team of Ricky Brunner, Harry Green, Bob Moore and Charles Huckaby finished 20&6 to win the Bayou Din DogFight. Second at 18&4 was the foursome of Larry Padia, Mark O’Grady, Steve Childree and Charles Huckaby . . . In the Babe Zaharias DogFight, the team of Steve Picou, Kenneth Belaire, Harry Green and Art Lecoq won with 19&8. Second at 16&3 was the team of Craig Fontenot, David Arnaud, Cole Lee and Dan Flood. Closest to the hole winners were Jim Smith (No. 2), Cricket Owen (No. 7), Adam Noel (No. 12) and Butch Cross (No. 15) . . . The Seniors at The Babe was played in a 2-man scramble format. First Flight ended in a tie with 63 between Larry Morris-Bob Moore and Rick Pritchett-Tommy Prejean. In Second Flight Jim Burden-Gary Wagner won with a 64. Tying for second seven shots back were Jerry May-Dicky Robinson and Orland Defrates-Ron Scrillia. There was a tie for first in Third Flight with Gary Anderson-Ken Favre and Art Miller-Ron Overstreet both posting 73. Closest to the pin winners were Robert Lynch (No. 2), David English (No. 7), Gerald Huebel (No. 12) and Tommy Prejean (No. 15) . . . In the Super Saturday Game at Babe Zaharias, played in 2 best ball format, the front nine was won in minus 6 by the team of Tom Lawton, Thad Borne, Richard Sibley and Lee Bertrand. On the back the foursome of Cody Metts, Art Lecoq, Robert Lynch and Charlie Huckaby won in minus 1 . . . Entries are being taken for the Babe Zaharias Four Ball Feb. 11-12. Format is a two-man best ball on Saturday and a two-man scramble on Sunday. Entry fee is $30 plus cart and greens fee. Food (gumbo and crawfish etoufee) and drinks will be provided each day. Teams will be flighted off the low handicap.
