PN-G's Brown adds ace to recent feats

PORT ARTHUR — Two days after shooting a 67 to win his third consecutive high school tournament, PN-G’s Jarrod Brown added the icing to his golfing cake by sinking a hole-in-one at Raven’s Nest near Huntsville. With the Indians golf team spending two days of spring break getting familiar with the course where the 4A regional tournament will be held next month, Brown aced the 198-yard, 4th hole with a No. 2 hybrid. Witnesses included PN-G teammates Lonnie Labove, Braden Bailey and Brandon Provost . . . Also getting in on the hole-in-one action was Harry Green of Nederland. Green, playing in the weekly Seniors at The Babe competition at Babe Zaharias, sank a 9-iron on the 120-yard, 7th hole. Thad Borne, Pat Waite and Larry Rogers witnessed the shot. It was Green’s fourth ace . . . It’s now 7 wins in 7 tournaments for the Nederland girls golf team. The Lady Bulldogs, paced by Felicia Sauceda’s 83, shot a 364 to win the LC-M Invitational at Sunset Grove Country Club by 40 strokes over Port Neches-Groves. Shelbi Vincent shot an 87, Katy Calamia had a 97 and Reid Whaley carded a 99 to round out Nederland’s scores. Blaire Brevell’s 88 paced PN-G,  which also got a 91 from Kamryn Scruggs, a 111 from Kayla Williams and a 114 from Oxy Benites. Allison Davis of Silsbee fired an 80 to win medalist honors. LC-M’s Brooke Brasseaux shot an 81 and claimed second in a playoff with Sauceda . . .   Chris Stroud, who has taken the last two weeks off, returns to the PGA Tour this week for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Stroud, by not playing at this past week’s Traditions, jumped three spots on the PGA Tour scoring average stat. The only players ahead of him are Rory McElroy (67.53), Tiger Woods (68.53), Justin Rose (69.09), Lee Westwood (69.15), Jim Furyk (69.36) and Keegan Bradley (69.47). Stroud is 69.61 . . . Jim Brown finished plus 6 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Joe VanDerWeg was second at plus 5 and Jim Robinson third at plus 3. Mike Hebert (No. 8) and Brown (No. 5) were closest to the pin winners . . . In the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks, Gene Jones one with plus 7. Twyman Ash, plus 6, and Rufus Mier, plus 5, were second and third, respectively. Jones (No. 8) and Barry Jackson (No. 15) were closest to the pin winners . . . The Seniors at The Babe was played in a 2-man scramble format. In 1st Flight, there was a two-way tie at minus 7 between Larry Morris-Dillard Darbonne and Rick Pritchett-Cap Hollier. The duo of Gary Wagner-Guy Van Cleve carded minus 6 to win 2nd Flight by four shots over D. Daupahine-Bill Draughon. There was a tie in third flight at even par between Stedman Tahaney-Ray Holm and Ron Scrillia-Del Reeves. Closest to the pin winners were Van Cleve (No. 2), Harry Green (No. 7, with an ace), Dauphine (No. 12) and Morris (No. 15) . . . There was a two-way tie for first in the Babe Zaharias DogFight. Finishing at 16&4 was the team of Larry Padia, Adam Noel, Jack Anderson and Paul Bourgeois. They tied with the foursome of Cody Metts, Billy Tucker, Jim Cooper and Ron Scrillia (16&3). Tied for third was the team of Eddie Delk, Rick Pritchett, Art Lecoq and Larry Davis (15&2) and the foursome of Craig Fontenot, Richard Darbonne, Harry Green and Ed Hetzel (15&1). Closest to the pin winners were Troy Sedatole (No. 2), Roger Koch (No. 7), Cricket Owen (No. 12) and Bob Moore (No. 15) . . . The Super Saturday Game at Babe Zaharias was played in a 2 ball format and resulted in a sweep by the team of Rick Pritchett, Gene Roundtree, Wes McDonald and Richard Sibley. They finished minus 3 on both the front and back nine . . . Golfers interested in participating in the newly formed Southeast Texas Senior Pro-Am can obtain membership forms and entry blanks a www.aquilagolf.com and www.idylwild@cma.com. Each of the six scheduled tournaments will be played on a Tuesday, with the first one April 24 at Idylwild. Others are set for May 22 at Babe Zaharias, June 19 at Bayou Din, Sept. 11 at Idylwild, Oct. 16 at Babe Zaharias and Nov. 13 at Bayou Din. Seniors 60 and over are eligible. Each event will be a blind draw ABCD points tournament, with players encouraged to make up their own foursome . . . Upcoming Saturday at The Patch is the 2012 Junior Masters of Southeast Texas. It’s open to qualified juniors ages 7 to 18. Entry fee is $20 for those who sign up today by 5 p.m.  Late entries, on a space available basis, will be charged $30. Play will commence with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun. Eligibility to participate requires being a member of a high school golf team or having played in a junior event hosted by the STJGT or STPGA . . . The Baptist Hospitals of Texas Southeast Texas Foundation is hosting its fourth annual Baptist Hospital Cajun Classic Friday at Beaumont Country. Entry fee is $150 per player or $600 per team.
