Hale’s 76 captures First Tee Fall Junior event at Zaharais

Blake Hale rallied on the back nine for a two-under-par 34 and posted a 75 to win boys 16-18 in the First Tee Fall Junior played at Babe Zaharias. Hale edged Seve Long by a stroke. Other flight winners were Danielle Thammasila (96 in Girls 16-18), Dillon Hebert (83 in Boys 14-15) and Thaine Tillie (77 in Boys 12-13). In the 9-hole divisions, Avery LeBlanc won Boys 8-11, Flight 1 with a 40, Collin Tedora won Boys 8-11, Flight II with a 50 and Karlei Hemler won Girls 8-11 with a 43 . . . When Chris Stroud returns to the PGA Tour next week for the Turning Stone Resort Championship in New York, it will be his first competitive round since Aug. 27 at the Barclays. Stroud is currently No. 128 on the money list with $533,890 in official winnings. He needs to move up three places to avoid a return trip to Q School. After Turning Stone, there are four more stops — Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Madison, Miss., and Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — in the PGA’s Fall Series . . . Lamar University ex Dawie Van der Walt rebounded from an opening 75 to shot rounds of 67-67-66 for a 13-under 275 and tied for 10th in the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series City Bank Lubbock Open last week. Van Der Walt pocketed $2,147.50. Orange’s Michael Arnaud finished at eight-under 280 to tie for 28th and win $1,110 . . . Bob Sharpless totaled 4 points to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Ben Fuller was second at 3, while Twyman Ash and Norm Shannon tied for third with 1 point. Closest to the pin winners were Tywman Ash (No. 8) and Ben Fuller (No. 15) . . . Bob Briggs, with 6 points, won the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Shannon and Bill Taylor tied for second with three points. Closest to the pin winners were Major Rising (No. 8) and Dennis Neef (No. 15) . . . The Seniors at The Patch was played in a 3 best ball format, with the team of Larry Stone, Don MacNeil, Ron Theriot and Paul Brown winning the front at plus 2. The back was won at plus 2 by the foursome of Dennis Walsh, Joe Castleman, Gene Harrison and Malcolm Clark . . . Wildwood’s Men’s Golf Association held its first Celebrity Tournament to honor area judges, county commissioners, educators, coaches and administrators. The event was played in a scramble format pairing Wildwood residents with the honorees. Tying for first was a team made up of District 88 Judge Earl Stover III, Wayne Thompson, D.G. Jones, Al Deluke and Jack Wiggins and a team of Lamar football assistant Craig McGallion, Tommy Holland, Bill Green, Charles Smith and Jerry Morgan. Closest to the hole winners were Pat O’Connor (No. 4), D.G. Jones (No. 8), Wayne Pratt (No. 12) and Joe Pal (No. 15) . . . The team of Bill Hanley, Ron Theriot, Ned Cole and Harold Wilkinson finished plus 37 to win the Senior Game at Babe Zaharias. Second at plus 34 was the team of Larry Stansbury, Bob French, Bernie Johnson and Paul Bourgeois. Closest to the hole winners were Bob Lloyd (No. 2), Malcolm tiller (No. 7), Larry Voight (No. 12) and George Hawkins (No. 15) . . . The Babe Zaharias DogFight was won at 17&4 by the team of Richard Briggs, Steve Picou, Wally Stanley and Don Varing. Placing second at 16&4 was the foursome of Billy Tucker, Roland Burris, Boyd Herndon and Brian Roy. Closest to the pin winners were Teddy Davis (No. 2) Lee Solis (No. 7), George Thompson (No. 12) and Josh Crum (No. 15) . . . In the Belle Oaks DogFight, the team of Derrick Wolfe, Wayne Rooccaforte, Tom Stirling and Cap Hollier won at 19&7. There was a tie for second between the team of Hilario Padia, Bill Hammond and Bob Briggs (16&5) and the team of Richard Briggs, Roy Martinez, John House, Dave English and Glenn Judice. Stirling was the closest to the pin winner on both No. 8 and No. 15 . . . Entries are still being accepted for a scramble Monday at noon at Brentwood Country Club to honor the late Mike Dukes. Dukes, a Beaumont resident and linebacker on the Houston Oilers 1960 and 1961 AFC champions, was killed in an automobile accident June 16, 2008.
