In response to numerous requests over the past couple of years, the First Tee of the Golden Triangle is going to offer a series of “Family Golf” instructional sessions.
The sessions will be open to moms and dads, uncles and aunts, brothers and sisters, grandparents and cousins of any youngsters involved in First Tee. Sessions will be held Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. from Oct. 6 through November 7.
A complete schedule is still being worked out, but the first gathering will be next Tuesday at The Patch at 5:30 p.m. Some sessions are also planned for Babe Zaharias.
The group lessons will include fundamentals of putting, chipping and full swing, rules, etiquette and course management. Fee for enrolling is $60 and the deadline to register is Saturday at 10 a.m.
Registration forms are available only at the YMCA of Port Arthur or by e--mail request from Jerry Honza at jhonz@pga.com. Equipment can be provided. Appropriate dress is required.
Honza, a PGA professional and Trey Tate, a PGA Apprenctice Professional, will head up the instruction team for the family sessions. Also involved will be Babe Zaharias golf instructor Chris Hunt, as well as numerous guest teachers from other area golf facilities.
CHIP SHOTS: The Rev. Mark Snodgrass of Grace Church Nazarene might have had some Divine intervention at work when he struck his second shot on the 510-yard, par 5, 3rd hole at Babe Zaharias on Monday. Following a robust drive, Snodgrass smashed a 200-yard, 4 iron that reached the green and didn’t stop rolling until it had fallen into the cup for a rare double eagle. Witnesses included Mark Petry, Al Childs, Milton Babcock and, quite likely, a higher power . . . Michael Arnaud took time off from The Adams Tour to shoot a seven-under-par 63 and win the first place medal in the 14th Annual Groves Volunteer Fire Department Tournament at The Patch. T.J. Lingle claimed the second place medal with a 67 and Jared Gary took third after shooting a 68 and winning a scorecard playoff. In team competition, first place went to Lance Barnett, T.J. Lingle and Bobbe Kibbe with a 63. Second at 66 was the team of R.J. Simon, Doug Romero, Jacob Monceaux and Josh Nelson. Placing third with a 67 was the team of Lance Matthews, Wayne Roccaforte, Buddy Bailey and Tommy Prevost. Closest to the hole winners were Ronnie Hicks (No. 4), Jeff Simmons (No. 7), Arnaud (No. 9 and Trevor McGuire (No. 18). Roccaforte (No. 9) and Arnaud (No. 18) claimed the long drive prizes. Putt off winners were Billy Foret, Brad Bailey, Arnaud and Tommy Prevost . . . The team of John Dunn, Jack Smith, Randy Moss and Tyler Rawson combined for a 58 to win the OHS Sophisticats Scramble at Babe Zaharias. Placing second with a 61 was the team of Brigg Patterson, Wesley Dishon, Frank Carpenter and Terry Doiron. Closest to the hole winners were Dishon (No. 2) and Greg Loyacano (No. 12) . . . The Brock Services, Ltd. team of Sam Brown, Billy Harrison, Mark Wright and Mark Netterville posted a 54 to win the morning side of the 2009 Chevron Phillips Charity Scramble at Bayou Din benefiting Buckner Children and Family Services of Southeast Texas. In the afternoon portion, the Daniels Building and Construction team of Terry Daniels, Rob Georges, Heath McGallion and Peanut Staudenmier won with a 56. A.M. closest to the pin winner on No. 2 was Tracey Thomassee, while the p.m. winner was Rob Georgas. A.M. long drive winner on No. 4 was Jay Bickett while the p.m. winner was Blake Iceton . . . There was a two-way tie for first in the IBEW Scramble played at Belle Oaks Golf Club. The team of Donnie McNeil, John Ford Jr., Walter Calvin and Dwayne Herman shot a 66, as did the foursome of Dan Hetzel, Chris Borne, Allen Harrington and Mike Sowell. Closest to the pin winners were Dwayne Herman Sr. (No. 3), John Bacon (No. 8), Bruce Carlson (No. 12) and Donnie McNeil (No. 15). Long drive winners were Chris Borne (No. 7) and Dan Hetzel (No. 14) . . . In the Jamie Craiger Scramble played at Belle Oaks, the team of Kenneth Holder, Jorden Bromley, Cody Holder and David Reeder won with a 55. Finishing second at 57 was the foursome of Paul Saddath, Max Fairchild, Carl Thibodeaux and Wayne Cosby. Cosby was the closest to the pin winner on No. 12, while Jason Merindino won the long drive on No. 14 . . . Bob Sharpless finished with 2 points to win the Friday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Tied for second at one point were Jim Brown and Mike Hebert. Sharpless (No. 8) and Ralph Childress (No. 15) were closest to the pin winners . . . The Seniors at The Babe was played in a 2 Best Ball Format. The team of Bill Hanley, Ron Theriot, Bill Draughon and Charlie Macha won the front nine and tied the back with the foursome of Larry Stansbury, Allen Suire, L.J. Hardy and Dwain Morrison. Hanley’s team was also the overall winner. Closest to the hole winners were David Arnaud (No. 2), Bernie Johnson (No. 7), Bill Hanley (No. 12) and Larry Stansbury (No. 15) . . . The team of Wayne Roccaforte, Tom Stirling, Gene Harrison and Lenonard Hendrickson finished 16&1 to win the Belle Oaks DogFight. Second at 15&4 was the team of Hilario Padia, Al Barker, Gary Fontenot and Cap Hollier. Gary Fontenot was the closest to the pin winner on No. 8 . . . First place in the Babe Zaharias DogFight went to the team of Bill Hanley, Bryan Grant, Don MacNeil and Bobby Hebert. They finished 14&2. Second at 13&2 was the foursome of Mark Roccaforte, Teddy Davis, Boyd Herndon and Cap Hollier. Closest to the pin winners were Jim Cooper (No. 2), Jack Pittman (No. 7), Herndon (No. 12) and Gerald Huebel (No. 15).
