McDaniel scores first ace with 4-iron at The Patch

Bob West golf notepad for Wednesday, Dec 23

Golf news continues to be hard to come by, thanks to the miserable December weather that’s discouraged all but the most ardent mudders. Overlooked in last week’s notepad was a hole in one by 14-year-old Port Neches-Groves freshman Deny McDaniel. McDaniel sank a 4-iron shot on the 165-yard, 4th at The Patch for his first ever ace. The shot was witnessed by Deny’s grandfather, Dennis Wehmeyer, who was playing with him, and by Kane Benoit and Dennis Wehmeyer from Wehmeyer’s back yard . . . Gene Patrenella of Lumberton scored his first ever eagle on the 392-yard, No. 1 hole on the Links Course at Bayou Din. Patrenella holed an 8-iron from 130 yards. The shot was witnessed by Jason McKewen . . .Bill Taylor finished plus 2 to win the Monday Seniors at Belle Oaks. Jack Faubion was second with 0 points and Mike Barnett third at minus 1. Barnett won the closest to the pin on No. 15 . . .The foursome of Drake Romero, Don MacNeil, Harry Green and Doc Richard finished 17&5 to win the Babe Zaharias DogFight. Placing second at 12&2 was the team of Hilario Padia, Teddy Davis, Ray Trahan and Jim Thompson . . . Belle Oaks head pro/superintendent Bryan Jackson got another setback Monday when he was told his cancer has moved into the breast bone. Jackson recently had surgery for breast cancer. He’s now scheduled for surgery within the next few days to have a chemo port inserted so chemotherapy can begin sooner than had been anticipated . . . As was reported last week, a full field has signed up for the Jan. 9 Bryan Jackson Benefit Tournament at Belle Oaks. In case of dropouts, Babe Zaharias head pro Ed Campbell is taking names for a wait list. Call 722-8286 . . . PGA Tour player Chris Stroud, who will be playing in the Jackson Benefit, has been seeing one of the Houston Texans team doctors, Chris Sanders, for treatment of a problem with his left foot. Stroud had to deal with pain in his left knee for much of last season. He plans to make his first start of the 2010 PGA Tour season in the Jan. 21-24 Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, Calif.
