BAYTOWN — As was the case often in football, Port Neches-Groves relied on Adam Morse to come through in the clutch.
The quarterback-turned-basketball player converted a layup and free throw with 13 seconds left to give PN-G the winning difference in a 57-54 feat over Baytown Lee on Saturday to open District 22-5A action. Morse, who is orally committed to Lamar for football, led all scorers with 20 points.
Ryan Abel had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Indians (9-5, 1-0), who had to hang on after a 29-20 halftime lead evaporated. Ram Polavarapu knocked down three three-point baskets in the second quarter.
Josh Hockless led Lee with 18 points.
PN-G hosts Goose Creek Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
