Second chances give WB girls edge at Memorial

It never felt like the Port Arthur Memorial Lady Titans had more offensive rebounds than West Brook Lady Bruins Tuesday night.
The Lady Bruins used 15 second-chance points to take down the Lady Titans 68-63 in District 21-5A action at Memorial Gym.
West Brook (12-11, 3-4) shot 54 percent (26 of 48) for the game and erased a 47-46 deficit to start the fourth quarter. The Lady Titans (18-9, 5-2) took a 60-56 lead midway through the fourth after an Antonirria Beasley basket.
West Brook then went on a 12-0 run before Victoria Brown ended it with a late three-pointer.
“We got out-hustled on the boards,” Memorial coach Kevin Henry said. “That has been our story all year. We seem to always lose the rebounding edge.”
West Brook did outrebound Memorial 49-39.
Robyn Onvorah led the Lady Bruins with 16 rebounds to go with 14 points. Alexine Andrepont led West Brook with 25 points (9 of 15) to go with 14 rebounds.
Memorial got 13 points from both Brown and Kennedi Lofton. Beasley had 11 boards for the Lady Titans and Channel Hamilton finished with a team-high seven assists.
“We gave up a lot in our press and gave up a lot on the backside,” Henry said. “They came out and executed better than we did. We can’t afford to give up that many offensive rebounds. You also can’t go 9 of 19 from the free-throw line.”
West Brook was not much better from the charity stripe. The Lady Bruins were 13 of 37 from the free throw line.
Memorial started out feeding the ball inside to Lofton, who scored eight points in the game’s first eight minutes.
Foul trouble and getting rest kept Lofton on the bench toward the end of the first half. Memorial led 18-14 after the first and West Brook was able to close to within 36-34.
Lofton picked up her fourth foul on the Lady Bruins’ first offensive possession of the third quarter.
Memorial was able to hold onto the lead throughout the third and did not give it up until early in the fourth when Andrepont drained a trey.
The Lady Bruins did most of their damage near the basket. West Brook had 46 points in the paint compared to 28 for Memorial.
Memorial scored 21 points off 26 West Brook turnovers while the Lady Bruins turned 20 Lady Titans turnovers into 14 points.
The Lady Titans hit the road Friday to face North Shore.
