BEAUMONT — Add more hardware to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs 2015-16 banner season.
Quarterback Jack Dallas and linebacker Steven Tims became the first teammates to sweep the Willie Ray Smith awards.
The only other time the awards went to the same school was in 2012 when Vidor’s Montana Quirante won both the offensive and defensive honors.
This year, it was all Mustangs who won the Class 4A Division II state championship.
The Mustangs sweep of the awards Tuesday capped a stellar year for WO-S. Dallas was the Offensive MVP and Tims was the Defensive MVP of the state championship game.
“It is special,” Dallas said. “There are NFL players who have won this award. To win it tonight, it is amazing. It really tops the year off.”
Dallas threw for 3,113 yards and 44 touchdowns and is only a junior. He has led the Mustangs to back-to-back appearances to the state final.
He is the first offensive player for WO-S to win the award since 2005 when quarterback Kenneth Beasley won.
Tims led another powerful Mustangs defense labeled “The Chain Gang.” He finished with an amazing 215 tackles, six quarterback pressures and eight pass knockdowns.
“I am very honored just to be here,” Tims said. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, coaches and all the fans who supported us through the season. It is a great thing to carry on the WO-S defensive tradition. Ever since I was a kid winning this award has been a dream. Today, it finally paid off.”
Tims is the second Mustangs defensive player to win the award after defensive back and current Alabama freshman Deionte Thompson won last year.
“The big deal was winning the state championship,” WO-S coach Cornel Thompson said. “It is a big deal to have their names on that trophy. They are two solid citizens and there is nobody more deserving. I am going to redshirt Steven. I wish we had Steven back. We have Jack back.
“I never been in this situation over than winning the state championships in the 1980s but being the head coach, this is extremely special. I am at the top of my career at this time.”
