A special screening of “The New Yorker Presents: Lone Star Nurse” will be shown in Port Arthur Thursday at the Robert E. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center.
The documentary, scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., highlights the Nurse-Family Partnership in Port Arthur, which is administered by the Port Arthur Health Department.
The unique program works by pairing nurses with first-time low-income mothers. The nurse works with the mother-to-be though her pregnancy all the way up the child’s second birthday.
In the documentary, the work Port Arthur Health Department Nurse Nicole Schroeder is highlighted along with five young mothers and their babies who are her clients.
Since the program started, it has filled a need. As of the end of February, there were 48 women on the waiting list.
At the time the documentary first aired a month ago on Amazon Prime, Schroeder had 105 clients with 95 babies.
Four nurses work in the program.
The program is for families in Chambers, Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties.
Schroeder and 2-3 mothers and their babies will be in attendance Thursday.
Those who have seen the documentary have praised the program, Schroeder said.
“We have got nothing but positive feedback from the ones who have seen the documentary,” Schroeder said. “It has given us an opportunity to get out in the community and make them aware our program is here and available. By getting a chance to look at the documentary, they get to see who we are and what we do and how we contribute to the community we serve.”
Light snacks will be provided during the special screening.
