LOCAL BRIEFS: Moran places 8th at state

ABILENE — Port Neches-Groves’ Tyler Moran had a goal of finishing off his senior year better than he did his junior year at the state powerlifting meet.
His mission was accomplished Saturday.
Moran jumped from 18th as a junior to eighth as a senior. He set a personal best record with a total of 1,675 pounds lifted. Moran squatted 635 pounds, benched 485 pounds and finished with 555 pounds in the deadlift.
Timothy Lee, also of PN-G, finished 10th in his weight class at Saturday’s state meet.
Port Arthur Memorial senior Brandon Jackson finished sixth at the meet in the super heavyweight class. Jackson squatted 680 pounds, benched 380 and deadlifted 660 for a total of 1,720 total pounds.
Nederland’s Brian Cunningham finished eighth in the 114-pound weight class. He finished with 345 pounds in the squat, 185 on the bench and 360 deadlift.
Gage Carreon of PN-G finished 17th in teh 165-class with 1,275 total weight lifted.
Nederland’s Ronald Zamora was fifth int eh 181-pound weight class. He squatted 550 pounds, benched 370 and deadlifted 520 pounds.
Vincent Tran of Nederland placed 21st in the 198-pound weight class with 1,295 pounds lifted.
Orangefield’s Austin Moore finished second in the 198-pound class with over 1,605 pounds lifted.

BAYTOWN — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians needed all seven innings against Goose Creek Memorial Saturday to improve to 8-1 in District 22-5A play.
The Lady Indians got a double from both Bailey Crorey and Hannah Denman in the top of the seventh and PN-G scored five runs in the inning to beat Goose Creek 9-4.
PN-G (17-6) put up a four-spot in the top of the first to lead 4-0 and Goose Creek went on to score a run in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 4-4.
Britni Hunt threw all seven innings for PN-G and gave up seven hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.
Kaitlyn Boudreaux was 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and a stolen base, Rachel Hammersmith was 2 for 4 with a run and a stolen base and Callie Jourdan was 1 for 4 with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Crorey was 3 for 4 with a run, two RBI and a stolen base and both Brooke Smith and Denman each had a run and a RBI.
“Our defense made some fantastic plays in some huge moments that truly showed how tough we are,” PN-G coach Jessica Lemoine said. “I am so proud of my kids.”
The Lady Indians travel to face Lumberton at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
NEDERLAND 17,

NEDERLAND — Amanda Longlet made sure the Nederland Lady Bulldogs were not on the field at Nederland High School very long Saturday.
Longlet pitched and hit the Lady Bulldogs to a two-inning 17-0 victory over Ozen.
She threw both innings and gave up one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. Longlet was 2 for 3 at the plate with a homer, two runs and three RBI.
Hannah Smith was 3 for 3 with a home run, three runs and two RBI and Bailey Beard was 2 for 3 with three runs, a RBI and two doubles.
Katelyn Maxwell, Madelyn Daniel and Longlet all had doubles for the Lady Bulldogs (18-9, 7-2).
Nederland travels to Beaumont to face Central at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
VIDOR 6,
NEDERLAND 5 (FRIDAY)
VIDOR — It was a classic again between the Nederland Lady Bulldogs and Vidor Lady Pirates Friday.
Nederland trailed 4-0 going into the seventh inning and tied the game on a Madelyn Daniel RBI single that plated Bailey Beard.
The Lady Bulldogs then went up 5-4 in the top of the eighth before a two-out Nederland error surrendered two runs and Vidor won 6-5.
Hannah Smith was 2 for 5 at the plate with two RBI and a double, Beard finished 1 for 3 with a run scored and Lexi Eversole was 2 for 3 with a run.
Madyson Guidry pitched four innings and gave up three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Destini Trahan pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

PORT NECHES — Alexis LaBure held the Baytown Lee Lady Ganders to four hits and struck out 10 batters in Port Neches-Groves’ 11-1 victory Friday.
Rachel Hammersmith was 3 for 3 at the plate with a RBI double and three runs while Avery Hooks was 3 for 3 with six RBI, two doubles and a run. Callie Jourdan was 2 for 3 with a run and a stolen base, Marlee Barnett was 2 for 3 with two runs and Brooke Smith was 3 for 3 with a double, a RBI, three runs and a stolen base.

CENTRAL 1
PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Indians completed the sweep of the Beaumont schools Saturday with a 17-1 victory over Central.
Josh Hranicky threw all five innings for PN-G (11-6, 5-1) and gave up one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Carter Henry celebrated his birthday with a three-run homer and Logan LeJeune was 3 for 3 at the plate with two runs, three RBI and a double.
Adam Morse was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI, Austin Bost scored twice and Chase Warren added three RBI. Cole Girouard was 1 for 2 with three runs, Braxton Boudoin was 1 for 2 with a run and Dylan McGough had a double.
PN-G returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Vidor.
GC MEMORIAL 4,
NEDERLAND 1
BAYTOWN — The Nederland Bulldogs scored a run in the first inning but the Goose Creek Memorial answered right back en route to a 4-1 victory Saturday.
Nederland went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first off a RBI double from Chase Kemp that scored Zach Friesz.
Kemp pitched six innings for the Bulldogs (8-8, 4-2) and gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Patriots (6-0) outhit the Bulldogs 7-5.
Nederland is home at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Lumberton.
