BOB WEST ON GOLF: Junior Champions League holding registration

Registration is ongoing for the area’s increasingly popular PGA Junior League that features a team golf format with players wearing numbered jerseys.

Boys and girls ages 13 and under can register for season three throughout the month of April by contacting Jerry Honza at jhonz@pga.com.

Fee for participating in the Southeast Texas Junior Champions League is $285 and includes an STPGA Junior Golf membership. Juniors already signed up for the STPGA will get an $80 credit.

For parents who have questions about about the PGA Junior League, a Q&A session is planned for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Babe Zaharias Golf Club.

Prospective players should accompany their parents to take part in a practice session.

Format for PGA Junior League competition is two-person scramble. Weekly team matches are being scheduled for May and June. Players will compete under the direction of PGA and LPGA professional captains. Anyone seeking more information about the PGA Junior League concept can go to www.pgajlg.com.

Bob Moore of Bridge City continued the recent run on holes in one at Babe Zaharias Tuesday when he aced the 127-yard second hole.

Moore used a 9-iron to what was his second hole in one. The shot was witnessed by Lee Bertrand, Larry Rogers and Bob West. …

Andrew Landry’s decision to play in the Web.com Tour’s Servientrega Championship in Cartagena, Colombia, turned out to be a good one. The Port Neches-Groves ex, who has had problems getting into the more popular PGA Tour events, finished tied for sixth and pocketed $21,175, after barely making the cut.

Landry opened with a 78, then roared back with a 67 to survive by one stroke. Weekend rounds of 65-71 enabled help him soar up the leaderboard and finish only four shots off the winning score.

West Orange-Stark ex Michael Arnaud finished tied for 25th with a 284 and earned $5,562. …

Chris Stroud, who has played very well in his past two tournaments, returns to the PGA Tour this

week in the Heritage Invitational at Harbour Town. Another Lamar ex, Shawn Stefani, is also playing in the tournament on Hilton Head Island. A third former Lamar player, Dawie van der Walt, is the third altnernate for the popular event. …

Bridge City’s golf team is headed to the 4A regional at Ravens Nest in Huntsville after it and Little Cypress-Mauriceville shot identical 36-hole scores of 336-354 (690) to tie for first in the District 24-4A tournament at Wildwood.

The Cardinals’ Skylar Petroski won his third consecutive individual title with a 147 (72-75). Other BC scores were 171 by Justin Smith (80-91), a 177 (88-89) by Connor Guillotte and a 195 (96-99) by Blake Montagne. …

Once again Richard Gaona is offering free “any day” passes to next week’s Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

Play of the day in the Senior 50 Plus Game at Babe Zaharias was best two balls. The team of Larry Thompson, Dillard Darbonne, John House and Charlie Perez won the front in minus-6 and tied with four other teams on the back at minus-2. Those teams were captained by Steven Picou, Rick Pritchett, Adam Noel and Roddy Weatherly. …

The Super Saturday Game at The Babe was also played in a two-ball format. On the front, the team of Tom LeTourneau, Earl Richard, Tom Lawton and Paul Brown tied at minus-5 with the foursome of West, Cody Metts, Cole Lee and Mark Petry. The back was won in minus-7 by the team of Pritchett, Bill Hanley, Ed Holley and John Ramsey. …

In the Friday Game at Zaharias, there was a three-way tie on the front at 5 under by teams captained by Noel, LeTourneau and Hanley. The back ended in a two-way deadlock between teams led by Randy Monk and West. …

The Thursday Senior Game at the Babe was played in a 9/9 flighted format, with best ball on the front and scramble on the back. The duo of West-Bob Barnes won First Flight with a 67, Raymond Darbonne-Ray Gallier shot 67 to win Second Flight and 73 won Third Flight for Dan Flood-Stedman Tahaney. Closest to the pin winners were Gary Fontenot (No. 2), Barnes (No. 7), Darbonne (No.

12) and Pritchett (No. 15). …

The Babe Zaharias DogFight ended in a tie at 22 points between the team of Thompson, LeTourneau, Mike Hollier and Richard Menchaca and the foursome of Richard, Larry Johnson, Bob Moore and Charlie Scott. Closest to the pin winners were Charlie Huckaby (No. 2), Bill Draughon (No. 7), Whitaker (No. 12) and Hollier (No. 15). …

The Groves Knights of Columbus sponsored Fetters Center Scramble, benefiting mentally and physically challenged adults, is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at Babe Zaharias.
