PREP ROUNDUP: Indians hand Pats first 22-5A loss

BAYTOWN — There is a tie atop the District 22-5A standings thanks to the Port Neches-Groves Indians upset win over the Goose Creek Memorial Patriots.
The Indians defeated the Patriots 7-0 behind a two-hit shutout from senior pitcher Carter Henry. Henry needed only 89 pitches in the win and he struck out nine batters and walked two.
The Indians (14-6, 8-1) struck early against the Patriots (8-1) with one run in the first when Adam Morse scored off a fielder’s choice hit by Ryan Leckich.
PN-G got four more runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Henry had the big hit of the inning with a two-run single to plate Trey Toney and Logan LeJeune.
Leckich picked up two RBI in the top of the fourth with a single that scored both Cole Girouard and Morse to give PN-G a 7-0 advantage.
Morse finished 2 for 3 with three runs and Henry and Leckich were both 2 for 4. Leckich had three RBI. Nathan Vidrine scored a run.
The Indians out hit the Patriots 11-2 and Goose Creek finished with four errors.
Tuesday’s game was far different from the Patriots 2-1 win over the Indians on March 18.
Goose Creek pitcher Mario Moralez went 6 1/3 innings in the March win against PN-G and gave up one run on three hits.
The Indians roughed up Moralez Tuesday. He lasted two innings and allowed five runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
PN-G returns home Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Lumberton.

NEDERLAND 12,

NEDERLAND — Zack Friesz celebrated his recent commitment to Lamar by scoring three runs in Nederland’s 12-0 win over Ozen on Tuesday.
Friesz collected three singles in the victory that runs Nederland’s record to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in District 22-5A.
Kody Kolb scored twice in the win and Chase Kemp had a double and a triple with two runs.
Brock Fenn also scored twice for the Bulldogs who travel to face Central at 6 p.m. Friday.

SOFTBALL
PN-GROVES 20,
OZEN 0

PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians needed only three innings Tuesday to dispatch of the Ozen Lady Panthers.
The Lady Indians scored 13 runs in the first and seven in the second en route to a 20-0 victory.
Rachel Hammersmith led the hit parade for PN-G (19-7, 10-2) by going 2 for 2 with a double, three runs scored, a RBI and a stolen base. Avery Hooks was 2 for 3 with three runs and four RBI, Callie Jourdan was 1 for 1 with three runs and two RBI, Brooke Smith had a double, a RBI and a run and Britni Hunt was 1 for 1.
Hunt struck out one batter in her only inning on the mound before Jourdan finished the game off with four strikeouts in two innings.
The Lady Indians face Central in Beaumont at 5 p.m. Friday.

NEDERLAND 13,

BAYTOWN — Destini Trahan was hot at the plate and on the mound Tuesday for the Nederland Lady Bulldogs against Baytown Lee.
Trahan pitched six innings and allowed only hit with nine strikeouts and one walk. She finished with a double at the plate.
Maydson Guidry pitched the final inning for Nederland (21-9, 10-2) and struck out two batters. Hannah Smith was 3 for 5 with two runs, a double and a RBI, Kara Litchfield had three RBI and Bailey Beard was 2 for 4 with a run, a RBI and a double. Kassidy Litchfield was 3 for 4 with two runs and a RBI, Gabby Fernandez had a RBI double and Lindsey Taylor added a double.
The Lady Bulldogs are home Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Goose Creek Memorial.

TENNIS
NEDERLAND’S WONG WINS SINGLES TITLE

VIDOR — Nederland’s Jaci Wong did not lose a set at Tuesday’s District 22-5A Tennis Tournament.
Wong defeated Port Neches-Groves’ Courtney Marsh 6-0, 6-0 to win the district championship. Marsh reached the finals after a 6-4, 7-6 defeat of Nederland’s Irene Maxwell and Wong took out Lumberton’s Madison Lytle 6-0, 6-0 in her semifinals match. Maxwell defeated Lytle in the third place match.
Nederland’s Zosia Selvesiuk and Lyna Tran won the girls’ doubles championship over the Goose Creek Memorial team 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Nederland’s Tyler White lost in the boys’ final to Goose Creek’s Isaac Herrera. Herrera won the match in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
Nederland’s Jorge Hernandez lost in the third place match to Vidor’s Reese Cruz 3-6, 1-6.
The PN-G boys’ doubles team of Matt Giesel and Seth Lamson made it all the way to the finals before being knocked out by the Goose Creek duo of P. Bualat and Utkarsh Sharma. Bualat and Sharma won the match 7-6, 6-3.
Goose Creek’s Guajardo Kharat defeated PN-G’s Prem Nguyen 6-1, 6-3 in the third place match.
Goose Creek’s Zachary Jimenez and N. Lagrada beat the Nederland mixed doubles team of Alex Luketich and Jessica Nguyen in the finals 6-1, 6-1.
PN-G’s Omar Hamza and Vivian Nguyen won the third place match over a Goose Creek team 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
