NEDERLAND — Madyson Guidry is on quite the roll right now for the Nederland Lady Bulldogs.
Guidry struck out eight batters for the third straight game Friday in Nederland’s 5-2 win over Dayton in the Class 5A Region III bi-district playoffs.
Nederland now faces the winner between Fort Bend Ridge Point and Richmond Foster. Ridge Point won 4-2 Thursday and Game 2 of that best-of-three series is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.
“I am definitely sore, but my team keeps me going no matter what,” Guidry said after her latest performance.
Guidry threw 104 pitches against Dayton just two days after throwing 100 in a 5-1 win over Port Neches-Groves. She threw 87 on Monday in a 5-0 win over Lumberton.
The Lady Bulldogs (25-9) used a four-run fifth inning Thursday to rally from a 2-1 deficit.
Kara Litchfield, running for catcher Madelyn Daniel, came in to score off a passed ball to tie the score at 2-2.
Guidry then put the Lady Bulldogs ahead for good with a sacrifice fly to right that gave Lexi Eversole plenty of time to score from third.
Kassidy Litchfield then made it 4-2 when she scored Nederland’s third run via passed ball.
Hannah Smith scored the last run of the inning when Hannah Goode hit a RBI single to right and the Lady Bulldogs grabbed a 5-2 lead.
“Something we have been trying to do for a while is not letting the opponent to pressure on us and us putting pressure on them,” Nederland coach Will Mallette said. “Dayton is a good team. For being fourth seed, I didn’t know what to expect. That pitcher [Brooke Austin] is pretty good. She kept our hitters off balanced.”
The Lady Broncos (21-10) did put pressure on the Lady Bulldogs early thanks to what Mallette called a few “uncharacteristic” things from Nederland.
Hailey Pence led the game off with a triple for Dayton before Guidry settled down to get a strike out and a groundout with Pence still on third.
Anna Etling then ripped a RBI single to left to score Pence and Dayton went up 1-0.
Nederland answered right back in the bottom of the first when Smith scored on a passed ball.
Guidry allowed a walk in the second and then faced only three batters in both the third and fourth innings.
She pitched out of trouble in the sixth and again in the seventh.
Dayton got the leadoff batter on first in the top of the seventh off a Nederland error. Guidry then got two fly outs and a groundout to end the game.
“My team tells me to calm down and I never stress over it,” Guidry said of pitching in a jam. “I know our bats will come around and do great.”
