Ned’s season ends after 19-inning round

BAYTOWN — Nederland tried to avoid the hot seat for five extra innings.

Yet it was in that fifth extra inning of Game 1 when Fort Bend Ridge Point scored two runs to move the Lady Bulldogs to the brink of elimination in the best-of-three 5A Region III softball area round.

Ridge Point won a 12-inning marathon 4-2 and followed up with a 3-1 win in the late game Friday night to end Nederland’s season at 25-11.

Madyson Guidry toed the rubber for all 12 innings of the Game 1 endurance race and actually gave up no earned runs on 10 hits in 175 pitches. She walked four.

Nederland, which scored one each in the second and third innings, committed five errors, however.

Hannah Smith, Bailey Beard and Lindsey Taylor each had three hits, accounting for almost all of the Lady Bulldogs’ 11 hits. Beard hit a home run.

Ridge Point’s pitcher tossed 24 strikeouts in the win. Guidry threw seven.

The Lady Panthers scored a run each in the fourth and seventh innings.

Errors haunted Nederland again in Game 2, when the Lady Dogs committed five as well. Ridge Point jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and never relinquished advantage.

Each team had only two hits after combining for 21 the game before. Nederland’s Destiny Trahan struck out three and allowed no earned runs in six innings.
