GROVES — Home cooking is the menu of choice over at the recently opened Blue’s Drive Thru and Carry Out in Groves.

Owners Joseph and Amanda Doiron are serving up plate lunches of homemade meatballs and gravy over rice, pork roast over rice and chicken spaghetti in addition to homemade tamales, side dishes, desserts and more.

But don’t expect a sit-down diner.

Foodies can call in and drive-through or walk up to the counter and order at the eatery, at 4000 Lincoln Ave. at the corner of 39th Street.

“I believe we’re the only restaurant in the area where you can get a plate lunch like this – with a drive through,” Joseph Doiron said.

Doiron is following his dream with the opening of the restaurant.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do, and it seemed like the right time to open a restaurant,” he said, adding that Groves is a great location for the eatery.

The menu will see some changes as the seasons change. Dishes like gumbo and chili will be offered during colder months, while cold pasta salad and similar items will be sold during the warmer months.

Doiron honed his culinary skills while working as a cook on tugboats through the years. The time in the kitchen allowed him to test different recipes, he said.

The Doiron’s plan to keep the restaurant as a drive-through just as it is now and is one of the reasons they chose their location. The former business that was there had a drive-through window.

The name Blue’s comes from Joseph Doiron’s love of blues music as well as blue being his favorite color and the fact that ‘Blue’s” rhymes with ‘drive-through,’ he said.

Representatives from Groves and Nederland chambers of commerce were on hand for a joint ribbon cutting to celebrate the official opening of the eatery.

Ronnie Boneau, executive director of the Groves Chamber of Commerce, welcomed Blue’s to the city, adding they are proud to have them here. Diana LaBorde, executive director with the Nederland Chamber of Commerce also welcomed the business and noted that the Doiron’s were following their dream.

Blue’s Drive Thru and Carry Out is open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. They can be reached at 963-1731.
