Funny how time … and Titans … fly: Martin’s prep career winds down in Austin

Kameron Martin remembers being nervous before a race.
He was a freshman, and that was three years ago. Now it seems like nothing shakes Martin’s nerves as his senior campaign comes to a close.
Martin’s highly decorated career with the Port Arthur Memorial Titans will come to a close at about 6 p.m. Saturday at the Class 6A Track and Field Championships at Mike Myers Track Complex in Austin.
He and three teammates are scheduled to compete in the 4×100- meter relay. Titans’ track coach Darrell Granger said Wednesday there will be a change to the runners Memorial puts on the track. DeAndre Angelle will start the race, hand to Kary Vincent Jr. and then newcomer Gregory LeDay will take over the race before handing off to Martin. Michael Ford is the usual runner in LeDay’s place, but he has been sick.
Martin, even with the change, is confident in the team’s chances to bring home a gold medal.
“I really like our chances,” Martin said. “We are in Lane 1 again and we have been improving in that lane over the last two years.”
This will be the third straight year the Titans run in Lane 1 in the 4×100-meter relay. The Titans finished fourth two years ago and were second last year.
DeSoto comes into the race with the best seed time at 40.53 seconds. Manvel is second at 40.55, Pearland Dawson is third at 40.86 and Memorial comes in at 40.87. Seed times are the times squads finished with at the regional meets held two weekends ago.
Martin said it is hard to believe how quickly the time has passed from the first time he put on cleats at Memorial to staring down his last event as a Titan.
“It has been a great journey,” Martin said. “I am just ready to get to Austin and put on a show. It will probably sink in when in Austin that this is my final race. I am going to have a lot of fun out there and bring a medal home to Port Arthur.”
Martin is coming off a regional meet that certainly did not go the Titans way. He injured his hamstring during the 4×200 meter relay and could not run in the 4×400 meter relay. The Titans failed to qualify for state in both events.
“You just have to bounce back,” Martin said. “Everything happens for a reason. I told the guys you have to come back from adversity and show the team we are still alive. I was never afraid my career was over with the injury. I knew if I had to run this week hurt that is what I was going to do. That is just me. I want to win and I am not going to Austin to lose.”
Granger couldn’t hold back a smile when talking about taking his team to the state meet.
“I am getting excited,” Granger said. “We put in good work Tuesday and it made me proud. Even with the substitutes, I think we made me proud.”
Granger added he is proud of Vincent who is the third straight Titans’ runner to compete in the 200-meter dash. That race is scheduled for 8:25 p.m. Saturday.
Corey Dauphine won the event two years ago and was second last season.
“Kary has as good a chance to win as anyone lining up in the race,” Granger said. “I think he has a really good shot to win the race.”
Vincent’s seed time of 21.14 is third best heading into this weekend. Jace Comick of Atascocita is first at 21.06 and Ian Braxton of Lewisville Marcus is second at 21.12.
This will be only the fourth time Vincent has run the 200. His first attempt at it was at the District 21-6A Track and Field Championships.
“Every time he runs it he gets a little more comfortable on how to run the 200,” Granger said. “His times keep improving. Anytime you get on the track in Austin, the sky is the limit. Kary is primed to represent us really well.”
