Stefani makes top 10

Lamar graduate Shawn Stefani finished the way he began the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn., on Sunday.

Stefani, who was born in Baytown, sandwiched two rounds of 70-plus with rounds of 65 and finished in a tie for ninth place, his highest of the season. Stefani recorded a four-round total of 274, seven strokes behind winner Daniel Berger, who was three strokes ahead of runners-up Brooks Koepka, Steve Stricker and Phil Mickelson.

Dustin Johnson shot a 7-under 63 Sunday to round out the top five.

Brian Gay, Russell Henley and Seung-Yul Noh were the next three placers, with Ken Duke and Brett Stegmaier tying Stefani for ninth.

The finish marks Stefani’s highest of the season and pushes him up to $388,638 in earnings despite 12 cuts. He made the top 10 three times last season and top 25 10 times, pocketing $1,757,803 while being cut just five times.

Stefani has two second-place finishes all-time.

He was stready through the front nine with three birdies and no bogeys. His only bogey came on the par-5 16th, but he parred the final two holes to finish at 5-under.

The U.S. Open is this week in Oakmont, Pa. Groves native and former University of Arkansas golfer Andrew Landry will tee off along with Matthew Baldwin and D.J. Trahan at 6:56 a.m. on hole No. 10.
