NEDERLAND — It was a typical matchup between a team from Groves and a team from Nederland.
The Nederland Little League 12-year-old All-Stars defeated the Groves National Little League 10-5 to continue in the winner’s bracket of the District 32 Major Tournament.
Nederland faces Chambers County Youth Little League at home at 7 p.m. today.
Groves National does not play again until 7 p.m. Monday. Groves National will play the loser between Bridge City and Hamshire-Fannett. Groves will travel but be the home team on the scoreboard.
Nederland was up 6-5 heading to the top of the sixth when starting pitcher Kyler Baker slapped a three-run double to deep center to give Nederland a 9-5 lead. Baker would eventually score to make the final score.
“That felt good,” Baker said of his late-inning hit. “I was just thinking I had to get those runs in. This was a big win.”
Groves National jumped on Nederland for two runs in the bottom of the first when Ryan Abate had a two-run double to score Luke Nguyen and Brody Bailey.
Andrew Hanley scored in the top of the second for Nederland and then Zayd Tatum scored in the bottom half of the inning for Groves National to give it a 3-1 lead.
Nederland then went ahead 6-3 in the top of the third with five runs.
Gage Driskell, Jacob Kotz, Chase Hefner, Bryce Gomez and Baker all scored for Nederland in the third.
Nederland coach Jason Kotz was pleased with the effort of his team after being down early in the game.
“This was a very thrilling game,” Kotz said. “We have played these guys for a long time and we finally got up on them. We were encouraging our kids the whole time, telling them let’s go bat and to hold our heads high.
“Baker had an awesome hit. It was a major lift for us. It was great.”
There was a blemish to the night during a bang-bang play at the plate. The home plate umpire called a Groves National runner out on a throw home.
The Groves National coach allegedly used a curse word and was ejected from the game. The coach then cursed a second time to the umpire. The umpire told a district official the coach was ejected for the next time Groves National plays.
