Home on The Rez: Cavness expects nothing from BISD request

PORT NECHES — Port Neches-Groves ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney Cavness stood firm Monday in saying the Port Neches-Groves Indians play home sports events at The Reservation.
Beaumont ISD’s board of managers last week authorized Superintendent John Frossard to find neutral sites for games played against PNG.
Cavness said he has since talked to Frossard and expects the BISD superintendent to bring the issue up to the district’s executive committee.
“I am not expecting anything from that,” Cavness said. “We will certainly not take away home games from our athletes, drill team, cheerleaders and band.”
Cavness could only recall one major incident between the two school districts last year and that was in February between the two boys’ soccer team. Central soccer coach Brian Bean was ejected and received a red card after arguing with a referee. Police were also called over after Jaguars fans climbed over the fence and headed towards the field.
“There are always going to be heated sports events,” Cavness said. “Those are taken care of by the officials and coaches. Those situations never amount to anything because most kids act pretty well.”
Cavness said the Indians have no plans on giving up home games for any sport this upcoming season or any other season for that matter.
“Everyone in every district is always welcome to our place,” Cavness said. “Our young kids dream of wearing that purple and white and playing on our fields and in our gyms. We will not take that away from them. It is the same in Nederland, Lumberton, Vidor and Beaumont. Kids want to perform at home and that is what is going to happen at PNG.”
