Seahawks start slow, finish fast

A slow start to Saturday’s game did not deter Lamar State College Port Arthur sophomore Petar Radojicic from continuing his impressive takeoff to this season.
Radojicic, who redshirted last year due to a back injury, scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a 90-66 win over Lone Star College-Kingwood at the Carl Parker Center Saturday.
LSCPA’s start of the game was real slow. The Seahawks (3-0) were getting good looks but shots were not falling.
The Seahawks then used a 25-3 run to end the first half to lead the Coyotes 44-21 at the break.
LSCPA was only up 15-14 when the run started.
“I thought we started off a little nervous and a little antsy,” LSCPA coach Lance Madison said. “Once we settled in, I thought we got some defensive stops. It was a good team effort.”
It was the settling down part that stood out for Madison as to why the Seahawks ended up shooting 53 percent in the first half.
“I thought we got some rhythm on offense and got some easy buckets,” Madison said. “Guys were able to get in the groove a little bit. We got good ball pressure and did a good job defending them.”
The Coyotes shot 27 percent in the first half and 36 percent in the game. LSCPA forced 17 turnovers and got eight blocks.
LSCPA also dominated the glass with 42 rebounds compared to Kingwood’s 24.
Keion Farrington, a native of the Dominican Republic, pulled down nine rebounds to go with 12 points. He said rebounding is something the Seahawks always work on in practice.
“Our coaches have always told us we have to play hard every possession,” Farrington said. “We do that every day in practice. We focus on taking care of possessions and going to get a rebound and hustling.”
Ryan Abel, a 2016 Port Neches-Groves graduate made the most of his time off the bench and finished with seven rebounds and seven points.
Akol Deng scored 11 for the Seahawks to go with six boards and former West Orange-Stark player Chase Rutledge added nine points.
Ozen graduate and LSCPA freshman John Comeaux shot 3 of 11 Saturday and finished with eight points. Saturday was his birthday and he did celebrate by draining a buzzer-beater at the end of the first half.
The second half was much more evenly contested with LSCPA playing several players off the bench and two Kingwood players fouling out.
Kingwood got 22 points from Will House and 21 from Jeremiah Bethea.
LSCPA returns to the court Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Lone Star College-Tomball.
