Port Arthur Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man at Baymont Inn and Suites, 3801 Texas 73, on Thursday night.
PAPD Maj. John Owens said police got a call of possible shots fired around 9 p.m. at the hotel. Officers found the male victim deceased from a gunshot wound.
“We are unsure of the suspects and are gathering information to figure out what happened,” Owens said. “We are in the process of notifying next of kin.”
Owens said the shooting is under investigation as they interview witnesses and attempt to locate a suspect who is said to have left in a vehicle.
Police did not release the name of a victim, only that he is a black male.
Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off an area where a blue tarp covered the victim towards the back of the hotel parking lot. Police vehicles filled in the area around the scene as officers spoke with individuals.
Cries of grief and disbelief were heard as men and women approached the scene near the officers. One woman called out “that’s my brother” and later a woman came running down the sidewalk screaming, “where’s my son? Where’s my son?” An officer stopped the woman before she collapsed in a grassy area as bystanders consoled to her.
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Marc DeRouen was called to the scene around 10:30 p.m.
No further information was available as of 11 p.m.
