LUFKIN — Lamar State College Port Arthur scored three runs in the sixth inning to pull within one of host Angelina College, but the Roadrunners escaped in the NJCAA Region XIV softball tournament with a 4-3 victory Sunday, ending the Seahawks’ season at 31-31.
The Seahawks have yet to win a tournament game in program history.
Angelina led 4-0 going into the sixth inning, when Kayla Sheridan led off with a single and scored on an Alexis Perez double. Ashley May doubled in another run, and Makenzi Malloy was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to narrow the deficit. But Angelina shortstop Miranda Wiggins ended the threat with an unassisted double play, catching a liner and tagging third for the third out.
Lamar State lost its first game in the tournament Saturday to Bossier Parish (La.) Community College, 8-0. Bossier scored seven runs in the third inning.
