PORT NECHES — Scott Carter and Josh Hranicky had something other than the start of football practice to be happy about Monday morning.
The defensive line coach and offensive left tackle for Port Neches-Groves were honored by the Texas Sports Writers Association as 5A coach of the year and MVP Sunday.
“It gives me a lot of energy knowing I got that award, and it makes me feel good carrying over a lot of energy coming out here and wanting to perform so well and wanting to pour my heart out,” Hranicky said after Monday’s practice.
Third baseman Austin Bost and pitcher Hranicky each made the 5A all-state first team. Bost and Hranicky are teammates on PNG’s baseball and football teams.
Second baseman, Logan LeJeune, now a freshman at Lamar, made the second team from PNG. Nederland graduate Chase Kemp was placed on the third team, while Hranicky was named an honorable mention first baseman. PNG’s Nathan Vidrine received honorable mention as a pitcher.
In 4A, Bridge City catcher Schuyler Thibodeaux and West Orange-Stark designated hitter Jack Dallas are first-teamers. Dallas, now a quarterback at Lamar who will also play baseball there, was also honored as an honorable mention pitcher.
Other 4A all-state players from Orange County:
• Second team: Ryon Stubblefield, DH, Orangefield
• Honorable mention: Caleb DuBois, first base, Bridge City; Chad Dallas, second base and pitcher, West Orange-Stark; Ryan Ragsdale, third base, West Orange-Stark; and Stubblefield, pitcher.
