Joe Mac Lewis, 91, died Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at his son’s home in Huntsville, Texas.
Graveside services were 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Huntington Cemetery in Huntington, Texas with Jerry Clark officiating..
Joe Mac was born February 9, 1926 in Huntington to Grady Lewis and Elma McMullen. He was the oldest of four children, John Lewis, Bobby Lewis and Billie Lewis Cain, all deceased.
He attended Huntington schools and played the Base drum in the band. Being the oldest he had to drop out of school to help support the family during the depression. Joe Mac was a World War II veteran where he was a fireman in the Navy, stationed on Attu, Alaska. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Port Neches, Texas for over 50 years.
Joe Mac met his future wife on a blind date at the Pig Stand in Beaumont, Texas. He and Opal Ford Lewis were married for over 50 years until her death on Oct. 15, 2007 at the age of 81. He worked at Texas Gulf Sulfur in Beaumont and Firestone Petrochemical in Orange, Texas for over 30 years. Joe Mac previously raised his family in Port Neches and on the family farm near Buna, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, John Lewis and Bobby Lewis; and a sister, Billie Lewis Cain.
Survivors include his son Keith Lewis of Huntsville, TX who he lived with for his last 5 years until he lost his battle with Alzheimer’s on Aug. 9, 2017.
