Chris Stroud got off to a shaky start in the opening round of the FedEx Cup playoffs Thursday, while more than 3,000 miles away, fellow Groves native Andrew Landry was well positioned after the opening round of the Web.com Tour’s regular-season-ending Portland (Oregon) Open.

Stroud, who was hoping to improve his position in the playoff standings, stumbled to a 5-over par 40 on his opening nine before rebounding with an incoming 33 at Glen Oaks Golf Club in old Westbury, N.Y. His three-over-par 73 left him tied for 97th in the 120-player field.

Russell Henley was the first round leader with a 64. The 36-hole cut was expected to be either 1- or 2-over par.

Landry, seeking to maintain his position atop the Web.com money list, shot a two-under par 69 over the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon. He carded four birdies and two bogeys and was tied for 28th. Landry was six strokes off the lead.

Another Southeast Texan in the field, West Orange-Stark ex Michael Arnaud, was tied for 18th with a 68.
