Dunne-Memorial, PNG-Silsbee called off

All but one high school football game involving Jefferson County schools have been called off thanks to the effects of Tropical Storm Harvey.
Port Arthur Memorial coach Kenny Harrison confirmed that his home game against Dallas Bishop Dunne, scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, was called off. The game was to be the last of the Lone Star Classic tripleheader at Memorial Stadium, following Deer Park vs. Houston Episcopal and Jasper vs. Ozen.

Also Tuesday, Port Neches-Groves coach Brandon Faircloth announced his game at Silsbee, which was set for 2 p.m. Saturday, has been called.
With Nederland’s cancelation of its Friday home game against West Orange-Stark, only Sabine Pass has not given word on any possible change to its Friday game against Pasadena First Baptist at Deer Park. None of the local teams will practice for as long as school is not in session due to Harvey.

“I’ve been keeping in touch with our kids,” Harrison said. “One good thing about Hudl (an athletic video website pronounced “huddle”), they’re able to at least go back and watch film. That’s about all we can do is go back and encourage them to look back at film from practice and from last year’s game against Westside.”

Harrison added he was unsure about the status of his Sept. 8 game vs. Houston Westside at Delmar Stadium. Last year’s meeting in Port Arthur was suspended in the third quarter with Memorial leading 34-27 because a bank of lights went out.

“I just don’t know their status with all going on in Houston,” Harrison said.

Harrison and Faircloth were hoping to hold different scrimmages this weekend to allow their teams to get some work in before Week 2. PNG is to host Baytown Sterling and Nederland is to visit Dayton on Sept. 8.
