Sabine Pass-O’Connell off; next game Sept. 29

It’ll nearly be October before Sabine Pass gets to play a football game.

Coach Jason Thibodeaux said Wednesday the Sharks’ game at Galveston O’Connell on Friday has been canceled, thanks in large part to Tropical Storm Harvey.

But there won’t be a Week 3 or Week 4 game for the Sharks. Sabine Pass is already off for the weekend of Sept. 15, and the Sept. 21 home game against the Deweyville junior varsity has been called off because Deweyville no longer has a JV team, Thibodeaux said.

That makes a Sept. 29 game at West Hardin the first game of the season for Sabine Pass.

Thibodeaux added he’s in the process of compiling a list of players who may be available to return to practice when classes resume Monday.

Sabine Pass, which finished 6-5 last season, had 19 players as of Aug.
26, three days before flooding begin in Port Arthur.

“We’re not quite sure how many will come back,” Thibodeaux said. “We’ll play that by ear.”

Many of the Sharks live in Port Arthur, which was hit hard by flooding from Harvey last week.

Thibodeaux’s apartment in Nederland also was flooded out, but he said that’s nothing compared the effect Harvey had on his players.
