Prep roundup: PNG returns with 4-set victory

TARKINGTON — The last time Port Neches-Groves stepped onto a volleyball court, Tarkington beat the Rock-A-Noos in four sets.

Oh, how things can change in 24 … days.

Kaitlyn Gil totaled 25 kills, Bayja Newby made 20 digs, and PNG avenged that defeat with a 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15 victory Friday night in a tune-up for the upcoming District 22-5A schedule.

PNG coach Barbara Comeaux called the victory a tribute to the kids for coming out strong after a long break due to Tropical Storm Harvey.

Newby also scored 16 service points. Libbie LeJeune dug 18, scored 12 service points and added 11 kills; Rachel Hammersmith and Gil each had eight blocks; Elizabeth Bolyard had five service points and five blocks and Stalee Adams also blocked five.

Comeaux said she’s searching for another match before PNG (13-5) begins district play at Lumberton.

Nederland 3, Kelly 0
NEDERLAND — Abbey Montalvo totaled 18 assists, three aces and five kills, leading Nederland (11-7) past Kelly in the battle of Bulldogs.
This was Nederland’s second match since Harvey, following a Tuesday win over Liberty.

Sophomores played big for Nederland on Friday. Karley McGill had nine kills and three blocks, and Mackenzie MacFarlane had five blocks and two kills. Libero Peyton Smith had one kill and 13 digs.

Nederland will host Huffman Hargrave on Tuesday and begin 22-5A action next Friday at Vidor.
