PREP ROUNDUP: Memorial ends long hiatus with district volleyball win

Published 10:20 pm Friday, September 22, 2017

Port Arthur Memorial practiced only six days before resuming its volleyball season.

Six days were all the Titans needed.

“They jumped right back into it,” assistant coach Tamela Roberts said.
Memorial made the most of its return to volleyball since the devastation Tropical Storm Harvey left behind and began District 22-5A play Friday night with a 25-16, 8-25, 25-13, 25-17 win over Ozen.

“The girls worked hard over the past week,” Roberts said. “This was really a good win for us.”

Statistics weren’t available, but Roberts said Nayla Bazile, Diamond Newsome and Dominique Marcel stood out for the Titans (12-5, 1-0 in 22-5A).

Memorial didn’t make many adjustments following the tough second set. Roberts said the Titans were just encouraged to play the way they knew how to play.

The Titans obviously responded. Now, they’re continuing their season getting off to one of their best starts in school history.

“I think it’s really big,” Roberts said. “We are making the playoffs. Every game, it’s that mindset. It’s not if we make it but when we make it. We know we got this.”

Memorial has a quick turnaround and will travel to Livingston for a noon match Saturday.
