Brooke Cobb, 11, has a heart that stretches from Plano to Port Arthur.
The sixth-grader said she watched a video at her church a few weeks ago about Tropical Storm Harvey hitting Southeast Texas and people wading in waist-high water. She said it was heartbreaking to watch and she wanted to do something about it.
That was when she decided to do a shoe drive for kids affected by the flood and Mission Harvey Shoes was born. Overall, Brooke and her parents, Charles and Shannon, collected 673 pairs of new shoes. One hundred eighty-three of those pairs made their way for students at Sam Houston Elementary School in Port Arthur.
“We started a GoFundMe page and people have been donating for a couple of weeks now,” Brooke said. “We left (Plano) on Saturday with as many shoes as we could. We packed all we could into the car.”
Even some shoe companies have found the page and made donations.
Shannon said her daughter told her she wanted to do something to help people around the world. Shannon said there were many people in the Houston area who needed help. Brooke replied she wanted to collect 100 pairs of shoes. It has grown since then.
The church’s youth pastor helped spread the word through social media, producing flyers and Brooke making a short video.
Shannon said she looked at Brooke’s foot growth from Pre-K to the fifth-grade to determine shoe sizes. They are evenly matched between boys and girls.
Principal Marcia Sharp said the donation was really touching coming from the heart of a young lady.
“This is a great choice because shoes were the first things to go in the storm,” Sharp said.
Sharp asked Brooke what she wanted to do for a career when she grew up. She answered she didn’t know yet, but she told the Sam Houston students, “It’s amazing to see all of your wonderful faces and some of y’all may get new shoes. I’m so excited to help y’all out,” she said.
Shannon said it’s up to Brooke if she wants to continue keeping the shoe donation going.
“When she collected the 100 mark I asked her if she wanted to stop. She said no. I want to collect 250,” she said. “We have been blessed. God has been faithful.”
