TULSA, Okla. — Living on Tulsa time seems to agree with the Lamar women’s golf team.

For the second straight year, the Cardinals captured the ORU Shootout, this time rallying in Tuesday’s final round for a four-stroke victory over the Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles in the 17-team field. LU, which opened the day three strokes behind ORU, fired a 5-over-par 293, the lowest team round of the tournament on the par-72, 6,085-yard layout of the Meadowbrook Country Club.

“We have been very successful at this course because we understand how important strategy is here,” LU coach Jessica Steward said. “We also make it a priority to keep the ball in play. To score well you have to stay out of the trees and select your approach shots carefully. But you also have to make good decisions when you get into trouble.”

LU’s Elodie Chapelet posted a 2-under-par 70 to finish tied for sixth at 5-over-par 221 for 54 holes. It was the first time that Chapelet has finished outside of the top five in 12 career events.

“Elodie scored well even though she was not feeling her best,” Steward said. “She is such a fierce competitor.”

Olivia Le Roux of the Cardinals finished in a tie for 10th at 223 after a 77 on Tuesday. Teammate Felicia Sauceda of Nederland fired a career-best 2-under-par 70 in the final round to tie for 12th at 224. It was the best finish of Sauceda’s career.

Eva Martinez Calavia posted a 76 in the final round as she tied for 17th at 228. Brooke Duzan carded a 77 on Tuesday as she finished tied for 71st in the 90-player field at 240.

“We have so much to be proud of today,” Steward said. “Mentally, we did what we needed to do and put together a very solid team score. We are always happy with a 295 or less because we feel that reflects the right level of mental fortitude, and we accomplished that today.”

Verena Gimmy of Missouri State claimed medalist honors at 2-under-par 214 after a 74 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals outdistanced the five other Southland Conference schools in the field. Houston Baptist was the next SLC team in the final standings, finishing seventh at 59-over-par 923.

The Cardinals are idle until they compete in the Yale Bulldog Invitational set for Oct. 6-8 in New Haven, Connecticut.
