MONROE, La. — Lamar sophomore Elodie Chapelet cruised to the medalist title at the Fred Marx Invitational, outdistancing the field by seven strokes in the 54-hole event that concluded Tuesday.
Chapelet fired a 1-over-par 73 Tuesday on the 6,172-yard, par-72 layout of the Bayou DeSiard Country Club to finish at 4-over 220. Linette Holmslykke of Murray State and Scarlet Eaton of host Louisiana-Monroe tied for second at 227 in the 70-player field.
It was the first medalist honor this season for Chapelet, and the fifth of her LU career. Chapelet was 2-over on the front nine on Tuesday before posting a 1-under 35 on the final nine holes.
“I’m happy to see Elodie earn another win. It’s been a little while,” LU coach Jessica Steward said. “What’s even more impressive is that she did it after taking this past week off because of an injury.
“These greens were tough, but she stayed patient.”
As a team, the Cardinals finished fourth out of 12 teams at 76-over 940, 26 strokes behind the Murray State Racers, who won the team title. LU posted a 23-over 311 in Tuesday.
LU’s Eva Martinez Calavia finished in sole possession of 17th place at 20-over 236 after a 78 on Tuesday. Felicia Sauceda tied for 27th at 242 after an 81. Olivia Le Roux ended the tournament tied for 34th at 245 after posting an 82. Brooke Duzan shot her best round of the tourney, a 79, to finish tied for 43rd at 249. LU’s Ashlyn Hendricks, competing as an individual, tied for 48th at 251 after an 80, her best round of the event.
The Cardinals were tops among the four Southland Conference teams entered. McNeese placed fifth at 955, 15 strokes behind LU. Incarnate Word was eighth at 975, three shots better than Stephen F. Austin, which was ninth at 978.
“We had a better attitude today, but unfortunately, this just wasn’t our tournament,” Steward said. “We will spend the next week and a half working hard as we prepare for South Florida.”
The Cardinals close out the fall season when they compete at the USF Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Florida, set for Oct. 30-31 in Lutz, Florida.
