Students of Memorial High School celebrated homecoming with a parade through downtown Port Arthur, ending at the Pavilion Wednesday night.
In addition to a pep rally, students’ school spirit was also bolstered by a special gift from Houston musicians and an athletic legend.
Trae the Truth, DJ Mr. Rogers, and UFC heavyweight fighter Derrick Lewis, presented Port Arthur Superintendent Mark Porterie with a $10,000 check.
The three celebrities are part of the Relief Gang, which has provided aid for Tropical Storm Harvey victims on several occasions.
Porterie said the check will be used to purchase school uniforms which are required for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. School uniform requirements had been relaxed through the Christmas holiday so that families impacted by Hurricane Harvey would have time to replace the uniforms.
Porterie said he was grateful the Relief Gangs generosity.
“It is just really helpful,” Porterie said. “This will help parents. We want to be able to assist those that need.”
Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman also was present to pump up the crowd Tuesday night and cheered on the Titans in the playoffs.
The school district will be setting an upcoming date for parents and students to come and pick out the uniforms covered by the check.
