Overall, the state added 256,100 jobs over this time last year.

However, the local numbers was not as good.

In August, the local unemployment rate was 7.2 in August. For September, that number crept up to 8.1 and there are over 14,000 people locally counted in that number.

The TWC chairman Andres Alcantar blamed the unemployment rise on the impact from Harvey.

“Hurricane Harvey impacted overall job numbers in September, but the dynamic Texas economy has created jobs in 10 of 11 industries over the year,” said Alcantar, in a press release. “TWC remains focused on building and deploying all partnerships necessary to support the rebuilding of our communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey and to put our fellow Texans back to work.”

The Amarillo area boasted the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 2.7 percent followed by the Midland area with a rate of 2.8 percent and then the Austin-Round Rock, College Station-Bryan and Lubbock areas with a rate of 2.9 percent for September.
