Trustee race, other issues on Tuesday ballot

Voting is set for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at locations around the county for the constitutional amendment and joint election, which includes a school board trustee race, a tax ratification vote, improvements to a water district and a port navigation district.

Here’s a breakdown on the joint election portion of the ballot:

Voters in the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District have a chance to elect a trustee for the Place 7 seat.

The candidates include incumbent Darren McCutcheon, 48, has held the seat for the past 15 years and is the current board president and political newcomers Jake Leforte, 41, and Derek Knepp, 36.

Then, voters living within the Water Control Improvement District 10 area will be asked to approve a tax hike for repairs.

The Jefferson County Water Control Improvement District 10 Board of Directors is asking voters to consider a $5.44 million dollar bond proposal for improvements to the sanitary sewer collection system, water distribution system and for water treatment plant improvements.

Voters in Sabine Pass will determine whether that district gets more tax revenue through a tax ratification vote.

That vote, if it passes, would put the district’s ad valorem tax rate at $1.227167 per $100 valuation in Sabine Pass ISD for the current year, a rate tat is $0.335354 higher per $100 valuation than the school district rollback rate.

The Port of Beaumont Navigation District is asking voters to approve the issuance of $85 million in bonds and the levy of a tax to pay for the bonds.

Early voting concluded with 2,084 voters casting ballots, according to information from the Jefferson County Clerk’s office. That total was slightly higher at 3,679 during the Nov. 3, 2015 joint constitutional amendment and City of Port Arthur Special Election.
