Rodney Brown, a sophomore forward, picked up his first double-double performance of the season as he led Lamar State College Port Arthur to a 71-49 non-conference win over Lone Star College-Tomball on Wednesday night.
The Seahawks improved their overall record to 3-2 for the season with the win, making it two victories in a row. LSCPA will go for three straight on Friday when they welcome Victoria College to the Carl Parker Center for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
Brown, a West Brook HS graduate, led three Seahawks scorers in double figures with 15 points, grabbing 12 rebounds. Silsbee sophomore Travious Grubbs had a double-double of his own with 14 points, 10 boards and seven assists, while San Antonio freshman Ethan White had 11 points.
The Seahawks, Brown included, got off to a slow start in the first half, falling behind 3-0 when the game’s high scorer, Jackie Davis, hit one from beyond the arc for Tomball. Brown scored a bucket to cut the lead to one and Ethan White followed with a basket to start a 10-0 run by the Seahawks that gave them a 10-3 lead with 13:56 left in the half.
Tomball slowed LSCPA’s transition game as best it could, walking the ball up-court on offensive possessions rather than trying to run with the speedy Seahawks. The plan worked well enough to keep the Hawks out of sync and by the end of the half, the typically explosive LSCPA offense only led by six, 30-24.
San Antonio freshman Kolbe Littlefield led the first half in scoring with nine points while Brown had six points and six rebounds. Davis, who led Tomball with 21, already had 15 points on the board.
The Seahawks kept working to wear down the Timberwolves, finally taking a dominating lead when Brown stole the ball and fed it to freshman guard Alex Williams who hit a jumper for a 59-43 lead with 3:04 remaining. Although Tomball chipped away at the Seahawks lead momentarily late in the half, LSCPA stretched its advantage back out for the final margin.
