PREP ROUNDUP: Sam sinks 48 points in Sharks’ first win

SABINE PASS — Sabine Pass didn’t have to outscore Baytown Christian. Daniel Sam took care of that.
Sam made 20 of 28 shots from the floor and finished with 48 points Monday in a 71-32 win over Baytown Christian. The guard sank 4 of 7 from three-point range and was 4 for 8 at the foul line.
Sam is already off to a 41-point per game average. He had 34 points in a loss to Bob Hope.
Harold James scored eight points and Jeann Zuniga added six for the Sharks (1-1)., who raced to a 24-8 lead through one quarter.
Sabine Pass will return to action next Tuesday at Warren.
Nederland 53, LCM 44
NEDERLAND — Following a 20-point game against Bridge City, Jonathan Rayford continued to give Nederland (3-0) the hot hand.
The senior guard scored 18 points, sophomore standout Hayden Hefner had 14, and the Bulldogs knocked off the Bears in non-district play Monday. Nederland overcame a 15-12 first-quarter deficit and outscored LCM 12-5 in the second frame.
Cade Smith added eight for Nederland, which plays at Hardin-Jefferson on Tuesday. Katon Brown led LCM (1-2) with 16 points and Cole Frost had 12.
West Brook 64, PNG 43
PORT NECHES — West Brook (1-1) opened up a three-point lead with a 21-7 second quarter and marched to a 21-point victory over PNG (1-1) on Tuesday.
The Indians, who trailed 15-12, could not recover despite five three-point baskets by Trent Lee, who led with 17 points. Edsel Damo added 10 points and made the Indians’ other two treys.
Clayton Carpenter had 15 points to lead Andre Boutte’s West Brook team.
PNG will visit Barbers Hill next Tuesday.
GIRLS
Orangefield 46, PNG 38
ORANGEFIELD — Able to keep the Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians at bay by leading start to finish, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats claimed a 46-38 non-district win at Bobcat Gym Monday afternoon.
The Lady Bobcats (2-2) jumped out to an early 13-4 edge in the first quarter but the Lady Indians constantly pushed back to get into the game the rest of the way until the Lady Bobcats finally had another quick flurry in the fourth quarter.
Guard Emmi Lummmus paced the Orangefield attack as she filtered in 19 points and went 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Fellow guard Faith Fregia pumped in 13 points. Post Cameron Choate powered her way to eight points and six rebounds while forward Jayme Deutsch added four points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Power forward Mollee Priddy paced the PNG arsenal, scoring 19 points while yanking down seven rebounds. Priddy drained 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. Chelsea Carrillo had seven points, all of them coming in the first half, and also had eight rebounds. Post Harlee Barnwell chimed in with eight rebounds while Shelby Letulle played scrappy defense off the bench and finished with four points and six boards.
The Lady Indians had 30 turnovers while Orangefield had 26.
Orangefield finished 15 of 25 from the free-throw line while PNG went 18 of 33.
