WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Source: Kennerson is SWAC player of year

Texas Southern point guard Joyce Kennerson of Port Arthur has been named the SWAC women’s basketball player of the year, according to a source with knowledge of the honor.

The source is not identified because the SWAC has not officially announced its regular-season honors, but The News obtained a list of All-SWAC honorees that tabbed Kennerson its player of the year. She is the only Texas Southern player to make the All-SWAC teams.

Kennerson scored 22 points Thursday in a 66-60 win over Southern University but was held to 13 points and nine rebounds in a 54-52 loss at Alcorn State on Saturday in Lorman, Mississippi. That put Texas Southern at 18-11 and 13-5 in the SWAC, costing them a chance to tie Southern for its third straight SWAC regular-season title.

Texas Southern, the defending SWAC tournament champion, is second and will host seventh-seeded Alabama State on Tuesday in the first round. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday at Delmar Fieldhouse in Houston.
