Two games saw a total of 34 runs scored as offense ruled the day but Lamar State College Port Arthur couldn’t put enough together to get past Blinn College on Friday afternoon. The Buccaneers took both games of the NJCAA Region XIV doubleheader, 10-4 and 13-7.
The Seahawks fall to 13-25 for the season and 5-13 in league play, while Blinn College improved its record to 25-13 and 14-4. The Hawks are back in action today when they travel to Pasadena to take on San Jacinto College in a doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.
GAME 1
The Seahawks got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the first on a two-out single by sophomore Briana White.
The Buccaneers would respond with four runs in the second inning and never trailed again as they scored at least one run in each of the next five innings. Blinn College amassed 16 hits and took advantage of five LSCPA errors to run away with the first win of the day. White went 2 for 4 for the Hawks with a home run, while Julie French went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a double.
White went the distance on the hill, giving up five earned runs on 16 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
GAME 2
Morgan Chavarria went 2 for 3 with two home runs to lead the LSCPA offense, picking up four runs batted in along the way. White and Marisol Ynfante each had two hits, both with a double, and Makenzi Maloy collected a double for the Hawks.
The offensive outburst came too late, though, as Blinn College took a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning after an eight-run explosion in the top of the third. LSCPA responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, adding two more in the fifth to cut the Blinn lead to 10-6. The Bucs added two in the sixth and one more insurance run in the seventh as they collected 17 total hits in the game.
Kelsey Stewart took the loss on the mound, working 3 1/3 innings, allowing 10 runs, though just three earned, on 12 hits with one strikeout and two walks. Jessica Saenz come on in relief and worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
