The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed Tuesday that 46-year-old Pedro Jose Soza-Orozco of Groves was the “Good Samaritan” pronounced dead at the scene of a Monday traffic wreck near Vidor.
Soza-Orozco was killed while attempting to help the driver of a disabled vehicle Monday afternoon.
A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said the wreck occurred around 3:45 p.m. on an Interstate 10 frontage road near FM 1135.
In an issued statement, DPS said a Saturn passenger vehicle was disabled on the eastbound frontage road. Soza-Orozco, driving a Ford-150 truck, pulled in front of the Saturn to help.
Soza-Orozco attempted to attach a chain to the disabled vehicle when it was hit from behind by a second pickup truck.
DPS said Justice of the Peace Rodney Price pronounced Soza-Orozco and a passenger in the Saturn, a 2-year-old child, dead at the scene.
The driver of the Saturn, Steafan Horne Jr., of Louisiana and a passenger in the Saturn were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver, Stevan Shonn Smith of Orange, and a passenger in the second truck were also taken to St. Elizabeth’s but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
DPS did not have updated medical information on any of the injured victims Tuesday afternoon.
Troopers were in the early stages of the investigation and continued to work to determine the exact factors that contributed to the crash.
