GOLF: Stroud drops to tie for 37th following final-round 74

Chris Stroud’s hopes of launching his title defense in next week’s Barracuda Championship riding momentum from a high finish in the Canadian Open dissolved with a closing 74 Sunday that dropped him 30 places to a tie for 37th.

Tacked on to earlier rounds of 65-72-67, Stroud’s 72-hole total was 278. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson closed with a 66 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario to finish at 23-under 265 and win by three strokes.

Stroud got off to a discouraging start by missing birdie putts from 6 feet and 4 feet on the first two holes. It was pretty much all downhill from there, as he was four over through 11 holes, didn’t make his first birdie until the par-5 13th and signed off on the fifth highest round of the day.

Another bad showing with his driver — he hit only 5 of 14 fairways for the second consecutive round — kept Stroud scrambling to make pars. He wound up finding only 10 of 18 greens in regulation for a second consecutive day.

After making 10 birdies on par 5 holes in 12 chances the first three days, Stroud birdied only one of the par 5s on Sunday. His only other birdie came from 4 feet on the par-3 15th.

It seemed almost certain when the final round began that Stroud would at the very least post his highest finish of the season. Instead, a T30 at the John Deere Classic remains his best showing in a full field event in the 2017-18 season.

While Stroud struggled on Sunday, his former Lamar teammate Shawn Stefani posted a second consecutive 68 and tied for 21st with a 276 total.

In the Web.com Tour’s Price Clutter Championship in Springfield, Missouri, Lamar ex Dawie van der Walt closed with a 68 for a 273 that left him tied for 26th. West Orange-Stark ex Michael Arnaud shot 72 for 278 and tied for 61st.
