Staff report

The Lutcher Theater’s 2018-19 season has something for everybody, Lynae Sanford, managing director, says — including some “can’t-miss” shows among its 14 offerings.

Additionally, the theater may greet its millionth customer during this 39th season in Orange.

Sanford said among the “can’t miss” offerings is “Jersey Boys,” the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a Tony and Grammy award winner and a “juke box” musical that enjoyed limited screen but enduring stage success. That will likely be the toughest single ticket to purchase when individual seats are sold Aug. 15.

It plays Feb. 4.

Sanford, who unveiled the season offerings to the Port Arthur Rotary Club this week, said other can’t miss tickets include six-time Grammy winner David Sanborn — he’ll play jazz, pop and R&B on Oct. 27 — and Michael McDonald, a five-time Grammy winner whose Christmas show will play Dec. 18.

The season includes standard favorites like The Wizard of Oz and the Sound of Music, but also offers some new treats like The Choir of Man. Sanford said she saw that act perform the first time in a New York pub. But the nine-man choir from the Isle of Man has developed a high-energy dance, live percussion and song show that includes pub tunes, Broadway, classic rock and more. They open the season Oct. 4.

A sleeper, she said, is “All is Calm,” a musical about the Christmas Truce of 1914, when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas together: singing carols, playing soccer, sharing food and drink. The poignant show has played in various forms, including public radio, around the country for more than a decade, and will have an off-Broadway debut this year. It plays Dec. 8.

Sanford said “Something Rotten,” a musical comedy set in 1595 England, is “one of the most cleverly written shows I’ve seen.” The storyline involves two brothers, seeking to compete with Shakespeare, who set out to write the first musical. It is Sanford’s “Director’s Choice.”

Sanford said the Lutcher Theater has been selling tickets to their regular ticket purchases since June, renewing full-season subscribers, and spotlight packages of four or more shows. Sales have been brisk, she said.

Offerings include a premiere package with 10-14 shows and spotlight packages with four to nine shows. Sales are ongoing.

On Aug. 15, individual ticket sales will open for all of the shows for the season.
