The stadium nicknamed “The Butch” won’t have Butch’s name on it anymore.

The Beaumont ISD voted 6-0 Thursday to rename the Carroll A. “Butch” Thomas Educational Support Center to the Beaumont Independent School District Memorial Stadium.

The stadium, which opened in 2010, was named after Thomas, a longtime superintendent in the district who was at the center of a $388.6 million project from a 2007 bond election that years later resulted in an audit that revealed misuse of funds. The stadium budgeted for $29.8 million actually cost $47.3 million, according to a forensic audit that also revealed the bond project cost data was, it read, “misleading, at a minimum by including the $72 million inflation amount.”

Following findings of mismanagement and lack of financial control, the Texas Education Agency took over the district in 2014, but has since returned control of the district to a local board, which voted on the name change Thursday.

West Brook and Beaumont United high schools use the stadium to hold football games. Beaumont United began classes this week as a result of the merger of Central and Ozen high schools.

Port Arthur Memorial, whose home facility is also known as Memorial Stadium, will play United at the BISD Memorial Stadium on Sept. 15.
