A game Sabine Pass Sharks team will travel to Hull-Daisetta to take on an undefeated Bobcats team at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“They’re good, and well coached by Stan Hodge,” Sabine Pass coach Jason Thibodeaux said Wednesday. “They have a big, ol’ back and they’re big up front. It may be a sloppy game with lots of running between the tackles.”

The Sharks have been idle since Aug. 31, when they opened their season with a narrow, 19-14 road loss at Pasadena Baptist.

“It’ll be wet but we have a game plan. We’re a couple of kids down; we don’t get many back-ups,” he said.

In fact, the Sharks are down to 15 players, with a season-ending injury to junior runningback and defensive back Harold James, who suffered a separated shoulder in the first game.

Thibodeaux said Sabine Pass will rely on senior Austin Smith and sophomore Grayson Johnson to pick up the load in the running game.

Jordan Boatman, a junior, will start at quarterback.

Thibodeaux said Hull-Daisetta was a district foe last season, so the teams know one another. The Bobcats opened with a 68-6 road win over Burkeville two weeks ago and a 34-0 win over West Hardin at home.

Sabine Pass got the benefit of an off week last week, and did most of their practice indoors.

That’s a two-edged sword, Thibodeaux said. His thin squad could use the rest but they need to be “in game mode.”

You can only tell so much, he said, working in the gym.
